That looks pretty! What did you use to touch up the bluing? This makes me want to pick up a beater and have at it!

just put it on with a cotton ball wipe with paper towel then buff with 0000 steel wool keep adding coat's till you match the old bluing.

I'm pretty sure FX was referring to the stock stain. Anyway great job!

That is beautiful. I am on the fence, the purists want to keep these all original, but I can see doing this if the stock is giving you splinters in your cheek or it is just hideous looking. It looks really, really nice, very tasteful refinish.

You did good. Was the wood anything that kind of looked familiar? Walnut, birch, ash, something that came from a tree? The reason I ask is I have two Chi-Com SKS. The stocks were terrible, no grain pattern, soft, easily dented, couldn't sand it. Looked more like compressed dog crap than wood. Yours are obviously a lot better.

The wood looks great! I refinished my SKS but I wasn't so aggressive with the sanding, because mine had lots of deep dings and such. I wish I could have achieved such a smooth surface. I also used Minwax stain, which didn't take as evenly as your rit dye. I'm going to have to try that method next time I stain...it looks terrific and seems to have coated quite evenly. Nice work!

I personally wouldn't have done the cold blue on such a large area of metal, but I suppose if it rubs off you can touch it up.

Klewan asked what kind of wood, and it seems that the consensus is that these are "Chu" wood, which is a Chinese wood similar to walnut. It apparently doesn't take stain very well, and certainly doesn't have the character of a nice walnut or the flash of a laminate. Still, it gets the job done!

You can check out my stock refinish job here:
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=653573

Mzhunter - there seems to be quite a few of us in the SFV with new SKS's - we should all have a range day at Oak Tree or something! We could call ourselves "The People's Army of San Fernando"!
