Best answer. That will piss him off even more; and DON'T explain to him why.

His jealousy will keep him up at night. He obviously knew what the gun was, knowing it was not on the roster; he has probably pined for one, but is not able to get it, the reason he felt compelled to approach you about it.

Why not a simple "It's perfectly legal for Me to own this. You don't know what you're talking about and should go back to enjoying your day and let me enjoy mine."

Running away just confirmed to him, he was right.

I just stare people like that in the eye and tell them to call a cop if they think I'm braking a law.

I would tell him: "Don't worry - it's not mine. I am not allowed to possess guns, so I borrowed this one just for today."

I have an LCP and love the little thing. I've never had a problem in the Bay Area...

Maybe you were shooting in the rim fire section? Sounds pretty stupid for him to come over and bug you.

Let me guess, there is no rim fire section... :-)

I brought 2 LCP's with me legally when I moved from PA. Sadly, my Judge and Armalite AR-10T stayed behind without me. Ironically, we found the ballistics of the standard Judge loaded with .410's to be lacking. It was a hoot to shoot, but as for it being banned here, it's just ridiculous.

When dealing with ignorant people, I've had success by first ignoring them. If they persist, directly but calmly tell them that you will not argue with them. Then continue to ignore them. You were in the right and the old guy should be the one to leave.

Almost makes me want an LCP, though if I went .380 off roster I would go Seecamp.

I have never been hassled myself. But every range I have been too, I have seen many OLLs and the like. Doubt anyone would even notice me or my having an off roster gun.

Why even acknowledge their presence? Just ignore them COMPLETELY. It'll piss them off even more. I figure if somebody is spewing jibberish to me, I have the right to pretend he's not even there.

Other gun owners are the worst. It's like when someone at work gets a clipboard, the power trip goes to their head. Same thing at a range. Everybody thinks they're a cop.

I like the idea of looking around quickly, hiding the gun and making the Shhhh! sign. No way i'm going to address some fool head on. Gotta pick your battles.

You should always carry with you a business card from a lawyer like Chuck Michel, who speciliazes in CA firearm law.

If anyone ever talks you like that--be he cop or crank--hand him the card and say: "Talk to my lawyer. I have nothing to say to you."

Then go about your business like he's not there.

Ignore him and walk over to his wife, wink and ask for her number because her man obviously has a small one.

Politely listen to what the fudtard has to say, stare blankly for a few seconds then ask, "U Mad Bro?"

In all seriousness I had someone say something about my Gen4 Glock 23 last weekend. I just politely responded, "Not to be rude, but you're misinformed. There are legal ways of obtaining off-roster handguns." conversation ended and we went upon our separate ways.

That's just flat-out rude. Acting in that manner reflects very poorly on you. If I was questioned as the OP was I would simply ignore the person. If they persisted I might say "mind your own business" but to say what you did? No way, that's bad form.

It makes you feel good though, doesn't it?

Throw the dog a bone.

I'd smile and tell him "you know the gun, now google FFL SSE and find out how to get yourself one" better yet write FFL SSE on scrap paper and hand it to him.

Maybe he was just misinformed and was just trying to "give a heads-up" to another brother in arms....I'd cut the old man some slack and not be rude.
