Default Hassled over my ruger LCP.

I was at metcalf range over on Sunday. There was this old guy next to me with 22 pistols. I was shooting my Ruger LCP at the 25 yard target when he comes over my shoulder and says,

"You're not suppose to have that"

I tried to blurt from my mouth from the gunshots all around me that I got it in single shot.

He then reprimanded me aggressivly

"Did you hear what I said? You're not suppose to have that."

"You better get that out of here before you're in a world of trouble."

Not wanting to start a commotion I move over the the rifle stalls to get away. He was watching me over his should, I think his wife or something was staring at me aswell with a grin.

Sucks to meet an uninformed person at Metcalf range.

You should have said; "You're right" and then put the LCP away. Then you break out the AK47 pistol and start blasting away.

Simply say "There are ways to own ANY pistol if you know the laws and the right people. Now close your pie hole and tell your wife to stop starring at me like I'm Magic Mike - It's starting to creep me out..."

Is this in response to the LCP (.380?) not being on the CA roster?

I think it's interesting he would know the CA roster well enough and the gun by sight to make such a comment.

They are authorized by the company I work for so I can have this in California. Does your department allow you to enforce laws while in civillian clothes at a public range?

Two possibilities:

1. Respond with this: "Please stop talking to me. I do not know you and do not want to know what you are saying. You are causing me an unwanted distraction while I handle firearms. If you persist in your dangerous behavior, I will complain to the management. Have a nice day."

2. Go straight to the management and inform the manager that a stranger is attempting to engage you in conversation that is distracting you from safe handling of firearms, that you want the manager to tell the fellow to be quiet or to leave--or else the range will have to refund your money and lose you as a customer.

I would opt for #2.

My solution to people attempting to start unwanted conversations at the gun range:

"What?! WHAT!!!!???"

[repeatedly point at ear protection]

"I CAN'T HEAR YOU, THIS IS A SHOOTING RANGE!!"

[resume firing]

I really don't understand all of these stories of harrassment at any range. I've never been questioned or harrassed while at a range.

Of course, I'm 6'2", 225lbs of Big Bald & Black that can radiate "Leave Me the gosh darn Alone" pretty darn well.

I've taken my jenky home build ak pistols to the range and people do come up to me but only because they are curious. They have always been polite and never harassed me.

I get this quite a lot but not usually for what gun I'm using (magazines, yeah), mostly for stupid things like smoking 50 feet from a building or park or worse on the sidewalk. So much so that I have a standard response for when people start talking FUD at me when I'd rather they shut up and go away. My usual response is "Did I give you permission to speak at me? No! So stop talking and go away, I don't care. I will not ask again." Works every time.

I've learned this lesson before, in the beginning i'd have done what you did, move away or put it away, now I just straight up will tell you the truth about it and continue, if you dont undestand or are misinformed, I will tell you the truth about the legalities and if you dont like it then tough. I've been hassled over AK's, AR's, hi caps, MAC style pistols, ect. I tell myself this is MY gun, MY range time, and MY FUN, no one will ruin it for me.

Stare at him for about five seconds. Eye to eye. Then say "Mind Your Own Business" and go back to shooting.

Don't give him a story trying to make him understand. That only make it seem like you're trying to to justify yourself to him. He is a nobody trying to wield imaginary power.

I hear about a lot of folks like this at Metcalf and that's why I don't go there.

For all that guy knew you were someone visiting from out of state.

Just look over at the guy and say something like: "Granjgo Nyvey Oglica Ramastavo? Como tonkala razvarga nebedsky!!", then flick your thumbnail on your front teeth at him.

He will look at you funny, and leave you the hell alone.

"oh really ? sorry you think that its not allowed, if you would like to call the police or CADOJ to report me feel free to show your ignorance to the law... have a nice day "

and would make sure to stand right there shooting my pistol , grinning and winking at him with each mag .....lol

Oh please. I've spent many, many hours at Metcalf, and staying away because you heard something about someones who may be there is just silly.

OP: hard to believe you just tucked tail and ran. Next time talk to the staff and ask them what's up. They're there to help, and if you give them the opportunity to do so, they will.

Metcalf is a good range and the staff there are great and are diplomatic at dealing with issues like this.

Usually it's the group of tatted guys shooting their Deagles sideways gangsta-style (or gagnam-style?) you have to watch out for ...

No disrespect intended to ink-lovers, Desert Eagle owners, or K-pop fans...

You can have whatever handgun you want, as long as it's not a semi-auto with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds; or a semi-auto that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:

(A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip.
(B) A second handgrip.
(C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
(D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.

(The Judge is classified as a short barrel shotgun).

The busybody at the range was concerned that the LCP is not on the handgun roster, and so is unavailable for purchase by California residents without jumping through some hoops, hoops he apparently knows nothing about.

Bringing off-roster guns into the state when you move here, as you did, is perfectly legal. Shoot your LCP with confidence and a clear conscience.
