Default S&W M&P Question

Hello all! I really want to get into the AR family, and have really been exploring my options. I really (obviously) do not want to spend a ton of money.

What is the difference between the M&P Sport and the M&P? I'm thinking of going for the M&P sport over some other true mil-spec ar's... Pro's and cons of the sport vs. something like the Turner's Del-Ton for $599?

Well I can tell you what the M&P15 Sport DOESNT have compared to other typical ARs, and you probably know them already:

No dustcover
No forward assist
Melonite lined barrels, not chrome
Basic handguard (no heatshield, but probably wont matter unless you are doing mag dumps like crazy)

My guess is the sport means no frills, basic AR. Good entry, cheap and won't disappoint. My wife loves hers and I love shooting it as well. Look at this review:

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/201...on-mp15-sport/

With that said, my AR is on order...a Larue PredatAR 5.56.

Here's my take: even if you buy the sport(I did and love it), there is a good chance you will catch the black rifle disease and start buying **** you never fathomed! I now have about 1400.00 in my rifle, including Aimpoint, STR magpul stock, quad rail, sure fire light, sling, muzzle brake, raddlock, moe grip, etc.
If you get a rifle with some of those features already, you could get a more high end rifle from the start...
I will never get rid of my Smith and really don't see myself getting another AR. It has almost 2000 flawless rounds thru it and is more accurate than I !
One small factor is the few ounces you save with no forward assist and dust cover, especially once you add what you want.
The melonite barrel is quite nice and has 5r rifling, and 1 in 8 twist which adds some versatility...
Buy what you can afford, shoot what you buy and don't look back!

The only real deficiency is the lack of dust cover and forward assist. The 1:8 twist is a great compromise, and melonite is possibly superior to chrome lining anyway.

The sports bolt is mpi, the gas key is chrome lined and properly staked. The lower has a forged trigger guard, which imo is superior since its curved from the get go. For the money you spend, you are getting more quality components compared to a similarly priced dti or dpms.

Just get it. You will built another anyway. This way you get an idea of what you like and dont like and can use that knowledge for your next build.

I agree with all of this.. you will find nothing but love for the M&P 15 Sport on calguns. Do a search, theres tons of threads about it... I have one, its my only one and I love it very much... For the price the gun is the bees knees... as they say. Good luck with your purchase. Post some pics of whatever you decide to buy. good luck

Great quality, low price and you won't miss the dust cover or forward assist. Go get one you won't regret it.

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone! I was leaning towards the M&Ps, and I think you all helped me make up my mind.

I bought my MP-15 Sport at Bolas Gunsmithing just before Thanksgiving. I looked at it side by side with a boutique AR-15 w/forward assist and dustcover that ran $100 more. The superior fit and finish and lifetime warranty made choosing the S&W easy. While I have not shot 223 in it yet the 5R rifled barrel handles my CMMG 22lr cnversion great, grouping about the same as my Ruger 10/22 at the Firing LIne. After 2000 rounds of bulk 22lr there is little fouling that a couple passes of the bore snake takes care of. I'm looking to getting up to Angeles to sight in my new Aimpoint POR with 223.

Cheers,
W-W

It isn't bad. Just get the right wrench, and if you don't have a vise(like me ), lay upper on table and lean on it and torque that bad boy! I installed a Troy medieval brake , and it works great, looks great and was only like 30.00...

While a Del-Ton may be fine, I would get the M&P Sport. It has a longer track record with ZERO issues after many, many sold.

If I was not already building my own rifle, I would get the Sport without a second thought.

I compared the SW MP Sport to the Turners Del Ton Sport for 599 and like the Del Ton better. It has the Dust cover and firward assist and I liked the barrel profile much better. Either are nice though.

My first AR was the M&P Sport and it's been 100% reliable and very accurate. The trigger is by far the best factory trigger I've tried so far. It breaks smoothly at exactly 6lbs every time with very little creep. The CMMG trigger I put in my latest build was the worst trigger I've ever felt on any firearm ever. The OEM single stage LMT is better, but is a little gritty and inconsistant at a 7-7.5lbs pull.

While I haven't tried a Del-ton trigger, I highly doubt it's as good as the M&P. I just bought a Del-ton Dissipator upper and the fit and finish isn't as good as the M&P. In fact the upper receiver doesn't fit snug with any of the lower receivers I have. I had to drop in one of those accurizing blocks to keep it from rattling.

Not to knock the Del-ton, but I think you get a better quality rifle for the money with the M&P Sport. You get 1/8 5R rifling which should be more accurate (especially with heavier bullets) and it comes with a Magpul BUIS ($50) so you can shoot it right out of the box.
