Default Possible to reload 7.62x39 and mosin with same bullet and powder?

I'm trying to get my supplies together, and simplify if possible.

Is there a (cheapish) bullet I can buy that will work in both calibers? How about a powder? Any chance H335 or another .223 popular powder will work?

I'm planning to move, the less I accumulate the better.

I'm cheap, too, so there's that :-)

H335 will work in both

bullets would have to be around 125gr ... standard for x39 .... light for x54 but commonly done

Now I havent actually miced the rounds but I believe 7.62x39 is a .308 bullet and surplus mosin is .311. I remember my friend panicking years ago because he bought a mosin and did the "bullet muzzle test" with a x39 bullet and the muzzle swallowed it. He thought he had a worn muzzle. I gave him a surplus x54r round and it fit nice and snug. I will go mic some here in a bit just to make sure.

I just mic-ed 10 rounds of Wolf 123gr 7.62x39 and got .308-.3085. I did the same with 10 rounds of surplus 147gr (Bulgarian?) 7.62x54r and got a clean .311 across the board.

thanks for doing that cruddy mutt! the stuff I'm eyeballing at 123 grains is. 310, which is close enough I reckon.

Berry's is. 311 but 110 grain, which seems too light? but I'm only guessing.

I may just have to load some and see how it goes. If I can use h335 on both that simplifies things and if I have to buy a different bag of bullets for the mosin so be it, Im a weakling that can't take more than a few shots with it anyway. why I Bought 300 cases I don't know.

Good luck. I dont load for either with ammo still pretty cheap. Focus more on the pricey stuff right now but I hope to load 54r eventually. I have a few snipers and some Finns that would probably benefit from some nice loads.

I've loaded AK bullets into 7.62X54R cases and shot them in my Russian Mosins. They were .310 diameter and 123 or 125 grain, don't recall exactly, but they were surplus pulled bullets. Worked pretty good IIRC, but I don't remember what powder I used, probably H4895 or Varget. I've also shot quite a few Lapua 123gr Spitzers, they shoot great in my .310+ mosins and I would imagine they would work in 7.62X39 as well. They are part number 4pl7045 from Lapua.

A 7.62x39 bullet that is .308 is unusual. I just measured 6 different brands and they are .310: Wolf HP - Wolf FMJ - PPU FMJ - PPU SP, M67 surplus and Demil Surplus

Components you buy for x39 will be .310

I think you can go up to around 150gr bullet for x54 with h335, Check a reloading book for the correct loads

As far as lighter bullets .. ive had great fun making low recoil gallery loads for plinking with the Mosins. This is using 10-13gr Unique powder and 100-115 gr .32 bullets

If you have lots of extra cases its something to know about if the full power loads get the shoulders aching.

I can get Berry's for. 15/per, so for whatever that works out to per round its cheaper than. 50 + per round for non mag 7.62. unless more yugo turns up.

If I could shoot magnetic, i probably would just do that. But I cant.

Id provably be best off $$$ with Mexican match ammo for both, but I have the brass now anyway.

Thank you Vlad, you've been a great help! I ordered these extreme bullets from freedom munitions for $46 delivered for 500. Cheap enough for me

123 FP
Quantity of 500
Diameter: 0.312

Hopefully there are no feeding problems but if so its not the end of the world.

Great suggestion on the plinker loads, that is way lighter than I'd have guessed! Like you said, cases are no concern, 300 is a lifetime supply for me, so why not?!?

what's it like to shoot those?

Sounds like they're cutting corners when they run low on stock. Could explain the wide groups they always give.

I think the Lee .312-TL-2R-160 was originally made for the SKS, but I've used it with fair results in a Mosin. If you are willing to cast bullets and use pistol powders (probably won't cycle the SKS, but Ed Harris did write something about this, may have had some loads that cycled the action) like Red Dot/Promo or 2400, you may get it to work.

Zero recoil, get around 2-3" groups @ 50yds then it drops off.
Fun for plinkin pistol targets - cans and whatnot. Great for kids too

Im sure the 123gr will be less recoil in the mosin too
Ive actually loaded 125 gr with pistol powder too, very low recoil

Just be sure to sure to triple check your cases for the correct amount if your loading with pistol powder

I used to load the .310" 123gr Hornady Soft Points for my Mosin all the time. They shot great. I would pull the bullets out of the spam-can ammo and press in the Soft Points. Killed a pig with them too.
