Bonnie, if you really wanted an answer to this you would have started this in Off Topic forum

Myself, I never refer to the wife as 'the wife'.

I expect this will be one of the longer threads in the Ladies forum.

"let me check with the wife" always makes me think the guy is looking for an excuse to get out of something........

And can't man up and say "I don't want to...." so he blames "The wife"? Yeah that wouldn't work for me. If I don't want to do something, I say I don't. Why try to make my husband look like the bad guy or make people believe he has any kind of power making decision over me. LOL

Interestingly enough James Wesley Rawles, famous author, referred to his late wife as "The Mem-Sahib". I bet she loved it.

Because many are not friends with their wives. They view them as the partner in the marriage, but they don't actually like them all that much as people.

I don't use the term ,but I would guess the term differentiates "the wife" from the girlfriend.

A synonym for "The Boss".

Reason number 802,901,500,110,556 why I won't get married.

/\This. Married for 8 years in January. "The" Wife is meant to give an unbalanced title of authority when refering to her in an attempt to not compromise yourself in a situation. For example, not sure about hanging out with someone or making a purchase you're on the fence about. Getting out of it by needing to check with the overbearing other half is a way of excusing yourself. Purely a defensive mechanism but others can feel like a term of endearment.

My wife.................is my best friend. been together for 36yrs and married for 34 yrs.

This both our second marriages, we both thought had it been our first it would have never lasted. If I refer to her as my wife, she would refer to me as her husband. I feel blessed!

We have six rug rats between us, 43 - 55 yrs of age. not counting grand kids & great grand kids.

God life is beautiful !

It's not referring to her as your wife that we are talking about. It is using the phrase "The wife...." Example: Someone asks you if you would like to go to dinner and you respond "Let me ask THE wife..." as opposed to "Let me ask MY wife" Using 'my" is referring to her using "the" is more like referring to her in the third person(I'm wrong on that, I know but I can't figure out if "my" is in the second or first and I am too medicated to think about it)

That would be "first person possessive".

Maybe it's the possessive part I like....

Put it in perspective.... After I was remarried, I used to say "my new wife" and "my current wife" but she didn't like this. She actualy liked just "the wife" after that. Now I just use her name.

I truly don't get calling "the wife" "my bride".
A bride is a woman shortly before, on or shortly after her wedding.

Oh shoot, the wife will be home soon, I gotta go finish dinner and get that kitchen cleaned up before she gets home

I believe it originated from Cockney rhyming slang. (Used in a small area of London)

If you've watched the movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, you will of no doubt heard some of it.

In Cokney Rhyming slang when men refer to their wife, they use the term "trouble and strife". So when translating for people who do not know what it means, they state: "the wife"

Also throughout England, people will refer to their wife as "the Mrs." and has nothing to do with rhyming slang.

"the wife" is better than "a wife"

my brother in law always referred to my sister as his "first wife" since the day they were married .. they've been married for like 40 years.

Most often I've hear guys referring to 'the wife' when talking to people who don't know her.

Regarding the use of "Mother"... when talking to the dog, its either "go get momma!" or "go see daddy!" or whatever. Outside that, we refer to each other by first names or "my gf" or "my bf". On calguns, hes "my partner" as most dont know Im female. I mention it here and there but I dont think its too common of knowledge. He also posts here.. sometimes. I havent seen him though. He must be hiding well.

Eh, who cares. I know I am #1 and "the only" for "the husband". As long as he is using it in a way that is positive, it's all good. "Much ado about nothing".

My wife and I have a pretty good relationship. She's my best friend and we can joke and be silly, more so than I can with any of my guy friends. Saying that, don't take offense to some of the things I call my wife, as I'll try my best to explain. Also she knows every nickname I have for her.

I might refer to her as "the" wife sometimes, because she IS the only wife, to me. I also call her my goddess and the lady bug.

I ALSO call her my bottom *****, (yes from south park, lol.) She takes care of me and she gets **** done. That girl would stand with me in a fight, fist or gun, and I would feel protected.

I cant say what other men may infer when they say "the" wife, but for me, it is one of my many strange terms of endearment. It just mean's that she's the only woman in the world.
