Default Suggestions on where to locate Savage Barrel

I was checking midwayusa and they are pretty well out until March which is fine, but the barrels the offer are ER Shaw (hit or miss) and Shilen which I don't know much about. Brownells only had the ER Shaw kits.

I was looking for around 20-24 inches in 308 with a 5/8 x24 thread for a brake. The rifle is a Savage 110 action and is being setup as a bench shooter.

Do you guys have some suggestions on where to order a decent custom barrel? or a decent packaged barrel?

I am in the $250-400 range for a barrel. I also considered ordering:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/125...tainless-steel
I could cut it down on my own and recrown it. I just don't have the tools to do the thread job on it. 30" is a bit much

Any suggestions are welcome

Call Shilen and place your order. They have threaded, prechambered, and blued barrels.
Wait time is going to be a couple of month though. Price is $350.

Brake threads will need to be done after the fact.

If you are serious about it being a bench shooter I wouldn't bother with a ER Shaw. Go with a barrel maker that has a reputation and Shilen is up there with the better ones.

Cut recrown and threads can be done inexpensively on a barrel of the rifle

Yeah I agree about ER Shaw, I was just disappointed that was the main thing for sale with the two large online retailers. I just didn't know about the reputation of Shilen. Thanks for the confirmation.

Get a Shilen barrel.
They are much nicer than shaw barrels.
I can shorten the barrel, thread the muzzle and re-crown your barrel for you once you have it.

Check with Criterion or Mcgowan. They both have Savage pre fits. Another sweet place to check out is Sharp Shooters Supply.

I contacted Northland shooter supply for Criterion's and am waiting to hear back about their inventory.

I am also considering the 30" beast. I guess as a bench shooter it really doesn't matter but with a 7-8lb barrel it would knock out the recoil (I know the 308 isn't a heavy recoil round). The size just seems so unpractical and for under 500 yards you really wouldn't notice the extra 100fps or so.

I guess the worse case if it became to much I could still just chop and have it threaded.
