Default a good all-around round 308

Howdy,

I have a Rem 700 sps 20 inch barrel with a 1/12 twist rate iircc, and have been reloading 168 grn match type bullets. I want a round that will be accurate, and good for hunting. I will be going to Basspro today, and want to buy some bullets.
thanks

If you're going to be hunting, pretty much nothing beats a Barnes triple shock X-bullet or Tipped triple shock X-bullet, but they're kinda expensive for target shooting. For target shooting, 168 grain or 175 grain Match kings are hard to beat. Check your barrel though. 1:12 is shallow for 175 grain. Heck 1:12 is shallow for 308 in general. I think 1:10 is more common.

What will you be hunting ? That matters for bullet choice.

Nosler 165gr Ballistic tip for thin-skinned critters, and Sierra, Hornady make fine bullets for larger game. Those bullets have been taking game for decades, and a lot cheaper than the newest, latest, greatest bullets. ( Nothing wrong with new bullets, just not always necessary )

I shoot 150gr Hornady GMX in my .308

Very accurate, legal for condor zones, and cheaper than Barnes.

I second the Barnes TTX ... fantastic bullets.

Hornady SST's are good as well for about half the price.

165gr Sierra game king should do well. I have the same rifle, it doesn't group well with short bullets in fact I seat 168 match kings at 2.885. Pick something with a fatter Ogive, stay away from Hornady if you plan to feed from the magazine.

Pete, why do say stay away from Hornady for magazine fed? Do you mean semi-auto only or both bolt action magazine fed?
My gun seems to like bullets seated at 2.800 and it is a semi auto.

I have good luck with a 168 Hornady HPBT with 41.5 Grn of IMR 8208XBR C.O.L. 2.82. And I also have a REM 700 SPS Tac.
