Is there anything official that states what ink color the DROS paperwork needs to be completed with? Where would I find that info? I didnt see anything in the FAQ section of the DOJ website.

Now this isn't a DROS but I find it safe to assume that the same 'rules' apply.
Personal Firearms Eligibility Check Application Submission Requirements: • The application must be complete and $20.00 fee submitted. Please type or print clearly in blue or black ink. |

There is no such regulation. It says ink is required. It does not specify color.

My day job also involves working with a CA regulatory agency. They have always required black ink; so, I carried that tidbit over with me when I became a dealer. I don't ever recall seeing a regulation however.

I only have black pens at the shop, but sometimes customers bust out their blue pens for some defiant reason.

We had our first DOJ inspection last week. Our DROS are by and large ONLY blue ink, and we didn't hear any complaints.
Personally, we have done it on purpose, when auditing the contrast to the black makes it easier to see if there are things missing from the DROS and 4473. I have gone thru every packet we have, and they are way easier to check in blue ink than black. Your mileage may vary.... CM |

Thanks for the replies guys....
I asked because I recently picked up a new 12ga and the guy was spouting off about how it was federal law that the paperwork had to be done in blue ink. Dicks Sporting Goods in Fresno, so go figure. Sad, but I expect that sort of thing there. The sales guy there says hes a gunsmith...surely has to be unlicensed if he goes about saying things like that. |

I work for the State and they always harp about using black ink. I would assume that if there was a requirement it would be for black ink over blue. Isn't that kind of outdated anyway? Wasn't the reason for that because blue didn't photocopy very well? It does just fine now.

I just read on ehow to use blue ink on legal documents because you can tell if it's an original and not a copy. Go figure.
