Default BLM overlays in Google Earth

I finally figured out how to get BLM Land overlays in Google Earth.

After reading through all the material at http://www.blm.gov/nils/GeoComm/home_services.html , I was able to put together a single file that has access to all the BLM overlays. I have posted that file at:

http://s3.amazonaws.com/blm_google_earth/BLM.kmz

Download and double-click the BLM.kmz file, and it should open in Google Earth. On the left, in Google Earth, make sure “BLM Lands Low-Resolution” and “BLM Lands” are both checked. This will ensure you’ll see the BLM Land overlay at any zoom level (“BLM Lands Low-Resolution” will only show things when you are zoomed way out, and “BLM Lands” will only show things when you are zoomed in.)

When you stop moving in Google Earth for more than 2 seconds, the overlay will refresh itself from the main BLM computer, and show BLM land as a yellow overlay.

Also, Google Earth overlays for California Deer Zones and Non-Lead Area can be found at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunti...emapsinfo.html

That's really awesome. I have often wished there was this type of data to determine BLM land. Nicely done.

Is there by any chance a way to add another layer that would include National Forests? To have both on the same maps, would be outstanding.

Default National Forest Boundaries in Google Earth

National Forest Boundaries are actually already available in Google Earth.

On the lower left in the Layers menu, click the + sign next to:

More... Parks/Recreation Areas... USDA Forest Service...

then select National Forest Boundaries

That is pretty nifty! Is there a way to make the yellow overlay translucent?

Default Changing opacity in overlay

That's a great question, and one I had myself. I've found a way to change the opacity of the yellow BLM overlay, temporarily.

In Google Earth, on the left, click the + sign next to BLM... BLM Lands... Surface Management Agency... , then right-click on Surface Managaement Agency: Composite, and choose Properties. There is a slider labeled Transparency that is defaulted to Opaque. Slide it towards Clear, and the overlay will become more transparent.

However, once you move around and change the view, the refreshed overlay will reset itself to opaque again. I'll continue looking to see if there is a way to make the opacity setting more permanent.

A different, cheesier way to view a particular piece of land is to zoom in with the overlay on, then uncheck/check (back and forth) the box next to BLM Lands to get a feel for where the boundaries are.

Pretty nifty OP. Here's another tool you can use to scout out prospective spots. You can drop pins and get your LAT/LONG for input into Google Earth: GeoCommunicator

That's an excellent find. The Google Earth data is actually being pulled from the geocommunicator.gov website also.

For any computer geeks out there, the BLM.kmz file is actually just a .kml file in a zip format. If you change the extension of BLM.kmz to .zip, you can open it with an unzip utility, and edit the doc.kml that is inside.

I have a question. Is there a way to set it up so that roads and trails show up on the map?

I know this is a pretty old thread but I was wondering if anyone knew how to make the blm areas transparent so I can see the terrain still instead of a big yellow blocked out area? Or if there's a more up to date file?

Not sure on the Google earth part but you can do the exact same thing with the Trimble GPS hunt/fish app.

You can use it on the computer or on your phone and it's awesome for overlaying public lands w/ a satellite view and forest service roads.

On Google Earth -> If the BLM layer is a photo overlay (and it probably is), right click the layer under "Places" and choose "Get info". This will bring up a bunch of options and on the window that pops open is a slider to go from "Clear" to "Opaque".

This is such a weird coincidence. I happened to be exploring google maps this morning and was adding all the BLM info in myself. After spending an hour getting it to work, I came on here and someone else already did the work.

My sisters boyfriend told me about another Iphone app when I showed him this and it could come in handy I think. Its a trial for i think 30 days but its only 2.99 to buy the app. It's called Trail Tracker and will map out where you go.
