Deer season kicks off in about 90 minutes. Good luck to all the hunters out there. Hopefully I'll have pics to post before the day is done!

Had to pass on a nice 2x2 about an hour ago. Fairly easy 409 yd. shot across a canyon, but probably about a 3 1/2 mile rugged hike/climb for recovery.

I'm probably gonna regret not taking that shot. It would have taken all day to get it back to the truck, but it could have been done.

Saw exactly one other hunter. Very unusual for opening day.

Just got back from my morning hunt in the north side of D11. Ran into 1 pair of hunters. Only heard shots once. Very odd for opening weekend.

Just got back from the weekend hunt. No hunters in the area I hunted, also no deer, not even a doe. Going back out next weekend. Probably gonna try d13 by gorman.

I used to be picky and look for older, bigger bucks. It's been tag soup for me the last few years. Therefore, the first legal buck I see is getting a .308" diameter hole poked in it's chest!

It's not even that I'm picky - it was more like "****- he's gonna tumble down THERE, and I'm going to have to hump him out by myself. That's a lot of work for not a lot of meat."

Well gents,
They are out there. I went hunting(for deer) in northern D-11 this past weekend; it was my first deer hunt ever. I only went out for a few hours on Saturday on my Dual-Sport motorcycle to do some scouting and see where the other hunters were(so I could avoid those areas). After hiking for a couple hours and finding some good sign, I returned Sunday morning before first light.

At 8:00am, a 4 pointer(2x2) showed up. It was a 175 yard shot placed perfectly and down he went. From there it was only 200 yards all down hill to a dirt road where I was able to bring my truck.

All in all, I was and still am thrilled to have gotten a deer. It was not just any deer either, it was my first.

Rodeoflyer, you make me laugh out loud. All I can say is Thank You

Here's the pic. I feel people are going to comment on the deer; not being huge and my rifle not being a traditional deer hunting caliber. That being said. I used a 64gr Winchester Razorback XT(lead free). He was facing me almost straight on, resulting in a hit in the center of the neck. A few inches higher than I would have liked. Exit wound near right shoulder. It was an ethical kill, he was done before hitting the ground. I will also add, I was not going to take a shot with that rifle if it were greater than 200 yards. I was concerned with the KE of the bullet not being enough. And that was only if I had a stable platform with ideal circumstances. All in all, everything lined up.

Ha! I concur.

Great job Bubba. Your deer is nice, your rifle and load is AOK and your shot placement was perfect for the scenario. It worked, right? So there ya go. Don't listen if anyone gives you grief.

No (tag) soup for you!

I was out yesterday evening. Will probably go out tomorrow evening also.
No crowds, but didn't see any deer yesterday, in the area either. Was nice to leave home at 102 degrees, and hit Wrightwood at 4pm, and it was 74 degrees.
This weekend's the quail/chukar opener, so it should be pretty crowded in D-11/D-14. So I'm going to stick with weekdays for the first couple weeks.

Great looking deer Bubba. For D-11 that's a hell of a buck.

I'm going out tomorrow evening and Saturday morning.

I need to get a beater hunting vehicle. My wife drives our truck, and my car is a stick. Going out means leaving her stranded.

You gotta teach her how to drive a stick. EVERYONE should know how.

I wish it were that simple. It's a small race clutch with an aluminum flywheel. It's either in or it's out - very unforgiving.

Headed out again. My goal for the remainder of the season is to find, and shoot, the buck I passed on last week. The area I go to has little pressure, and I'm pretty sure he'll still be around.
