We've got a Marlin XT22-YR for the kids that I'm pretty happy with. I wanted a bolt action rather than a semi to slow them down and make them think about what they're doing more. It also comes with a single shot adapter which is nice until you're sure they know how to keep the muzzle pointed down range between shots. It was just under $200 + tax & DROS.

I just picked up a Savage Rascal for my 7 year old son. Nice little rifle. Nicer than a Cricket. Light enough for him to operate easily (which can't be said for the 10/22 we own). The feed ramp allows you to just drop in a round without feeding it into the chamber. It cocks on opening which is also nice.

I bought my boys (then 11 and 8) each a Rossi matched pair last year for Christmas. I purchased them on Black Friday for I think $139.00 plus a rebate. My understanding is Rossi / Taurus are the same company so I wasn't really worried about quality, etc. They came with two barrels, a single shot .22lr and a single shot 20 gauge as well as a carrying pouch. Size wise they fit both my boys perfect (they look like twins) and should for a few years. I believe they also make a Trifecta that you get a .223 barrel as well. Good rifles, Great price, Boys love them, Guess you could say it worked out even better than I hoped. Good luck with your search and purchase.
