Default Winchester - Worlds Fastest Rimfire Cartridge Coming Soon!

This is a repost from my Varminter Site. I'm posting it in the hunting forum because it is hunters who will benefit most from this.:

I was trying to get more information on this, but there is little available. Winchester announced that they are releasing the "world's fastest rimfire", with the announcement coming on January 1, 2013.

From what I was told last week, this will be a NEW caliber and at least one rifle manufacturer has committed to chamber a rifle for it (CZ would be nice, but doubtful).

My guess is either a .20 Caliber (necked down .22 Magnum) with a light bullet, or... a .14 Caliber (doubtful). Since the Centurion 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum is already pushing their Varmint ammunition at over 2500 feet per second, with a 30 grain bullet, we know that it is definitely doable to surpass the 2550 feet per second that the 17 HMR reaches.

Hmmm, i have been curious if someone would come up with another beefed up rimfire cartridge. Something a little bigger then a .22 mag.

I don't care how fast it is. If it's not 22lr cheap forget about it.

Every great cartridge started somewhere. With that said, probably won't be cheap at first.

This is true and for hunting the cost is dismal when you factor in a hunting license, gas, your gun, ect...

For target practice i could see more of a case.

Winchester makes the .223 super short traveling at 4,000 fps and the round can be reloaded. What advantage would a rimfire bring to the market?
You would have to rechamber or buy a new rifle and the round is virtually not reloadable.
I am having a lot of trouble finding value in this unless the round is in the cost range of 22 magnums.
There are some chamberings that are made to improve sales not to improve on the current availability.

Just my thoughts
Bill

If it can come in around the price of a 17 HMR I can see a great market for it. Even more so of it keeps its energy down range better.

Talking A new rimfire???

My hopes would be for a 25 to 30 caliber. I can see a 25 more than the 30 but it would open the scope of rimfire hunting to more medium sized game or predator hunting. Either way i would love to know more.

I'm definitely interested. More gun/caliber choices are a good thing in my book.

Here's my guess..check back next month and see if I was right.

It'll be a .17 caliber and the rimmed case will be wider but not longer than a .22WMR. Somewhat smaller than a .223. Maybe halfway between. Necked down to .17.

3100 FPS. And they'll call it.... 17 WMRE (Winchester Magnum Rimfire Extreme)

Do I get two guesses?...lol

...or .20 caliber (5mm) in the same case. 2900 FPS.

A powerful rimfire chambered in an AR comes to mind...

Thats probably a 100% guarentee as long as they have the round/rifle ready for production.

They've told me that they will have it there. I'll be at MD at 1PM, or whatever time they let the folks who don't have the early invite in.

What's up with the early invite thing? Is it to weed out all the lookie loos and people who aren't media like it should be? Why cut the day in half for the media? Just deny all the friends and friends of friends who are just there to shoot the guns.

Who's behind to we have to kiss to get the early invite?

I don't know. I imagine it gets the big print magazines and their website folks in first. Last year I tried to speak to folks about the 17 Hornet, but no one had the time. They were too busy shuffling folks up to the shooting bench to shoot the latest .465 Loudenboomer! It's a shame because an advocate of their cartridge would be better than someone who just writes about it once in print and moves on to the next release.

It looks like the information is slowly leaking out:

This ammo listing has started to pop-up on some of the wholesaler websites:

Could this be THE NEW ONE?? Btw, I like the name, "17 Super Mag" too! If they have a 25 grain V-Max going 3000+ fps, that might be something that is very useful for the ground squirrel/close-in predator caller!

I just posted this on my Varminter site:

I'm waiting to hear back from Winchester directly, but in the meantime I stumbled upon this from Petersen's Hunting:
The short blog post and video is titled "Introducing the New 17 Winchester Super Magnum".

The author states that the 20 grain bullet is traveling at 3000 feet per second with the 25 grain bullet hitting 2600 feet per second. It also looks like Savage will be chambering this cartridge.

I'll post up more as I get information.

Eric
