Forest Service, BLM, and NPS jobs are extremely difficult to get. There are no pre-service academies for this. All go through FLETC for either uniformed or 1811 criminal investigator training. Forest Service 1811 jobs are some for the most sought after in Federal Service. They usually take only people working for the Forest Service or lateral hires from another investigative agency. I have only seen BLM jobs advertised rarely, and when they do advertise on USAJOBS, the only one I ever saw are for Tribal Police Officer and Onvestigator, and you have to be part American Indian to apply. In 14 years I have not seen advertisement for NPS, not even for Park Police, which comes under the NPS. They only have three AOR's, and that is New York, San Francisco (The Presidio), and Washington DC which is one the largest LE Offices in DC.

Opt for an agency that gives you at least some control over where you pursue your career. Raising kids successfully is difficult enough without having to deal with family relocation every couple of years.

In terms of federal park/forest service LE positions, like others have said, they are very hard to get especially the 1811 spots. The BLM academy was run out of the same FLETC I went to and I became friends with several of them. Most, if not all of the BLM recruits at that time were Native American and many were prior Tribal Police Officers and or state/local park rangers before being hired by BLM.

I wouldn't bother with a self sponsored academy if you are looking into federal LE. You will have to go through FLETC regardless of whether you are an entry level applicant right off the street or if you are a seasoned LE veteran.

Another good option if you just like working outdoors is the Border Patrol. The work is almost all outdoors and there is a good deal of interaction with BLM, state/local park rangers and other LE organizations. It would be a good spot to get your career started and to start networking. Plus it will give you federal time towards your retirement and other federal benefits that would transfer over should you ever choose to move on to BLM.

All those jobs are posted on www.usajobs.gov, if they have any openings.

Just go to prison. I did. After 27 years I'm back on the streets with all the new "skills" and "abilities" I learned while I was there.

When you mention "prison" everyone thinks Correctional Officer. Actually its a little city in itself. Business Office, Warehouses, Transportation, Facilities, Recreation, Farming just to name a few.

Usajobs is giant black hole.... I had a " point of contact" for a job with the air force. The computer kicked back my application and i lost the job, even when the recruiter told me i was qualified.

Yes, but Im doing much better now that Im retired. Worked at the US Penitentiary in Lompoc.

When I went to look for jobs in the Federal Building in Seattle there were 1000's of announcements on the board. A guy walked by and asked me if I worked for the federal government...I said no, and he politely pointed me to the other bulletin board across the hall...it had two or three announcements posted, one was for a correctional officer in Lompoc.

Its hard to get into the Federal Government, but once your in, your career paths are unlimited if you willing to relocate. I had the full intention of obtaining a job with the Federal Bureau of Prisons to get my foot in the door, and transfer to another agency afterwards. Most jobs are announced "internally" (as in the 1000 announcements in the Federal Building), or to current government employees, before they are announced "externally" to civilians.

I didn't do the entire 27 years as a hack, moved around into various career paths within the BOP and retired as a GS12.

join any federal agency, get your time started, then jump to where you want to go later on, and have experience under your belt.
of course you have to go through "flee-tac" again.

+100 times on that one brother. Because I was pretty dumb, I was there three times: once for the BP Academy, the second time for CITP/CBES, and the third time for specialized training in 2009 before I went OCONUS. The first time was hell on earth, the second time wasn't even CLOSE to how bad the first time was, and the last time was pretty much a party atmosphere. Specialized training was actually pretty fun especially if you are in a class of journeyman agents and the topics are actually applicable to you current assignment.

Artesia and even Brunswick isn't that bad..
I was detailed to Brunswick and Artesia for almost two years..it's not that bad..
But the one thing I can't stress enough is you WILL need a vehicle..to go anywhere you will need a vehicle.

As a basic student it was hell in both Brunswick and Artesia..but as advanced students it was more fun and as an instructor it was outstanding..!

Once you get hired and go to the academy, all you additional training will be whatever the training budgets will bear..you just say I want these classes and the govt to pay for it..you go where they tell you..Since your just starting you won't have much time on the books to go where you chose for training..unless you are really close then you maybe able to.

Good Luck on your career..

If you look hard enough and work at it, most likely you will get it.

From what I understand, natural resources FED LE jobs are very competative. I know a guy who is a NPS Ranger at Yosemite and he loves it.

For those that get the job, I hear they never look back. Keep pluggin away at BLM, NPS and USFS, and continue your education, specializing in something outdoorsy. They look for degree's specializing in outdoorsy stuff, and stuff.

Federal Retirement= 1.7% of a low salary per year up to 20 years then drops to 1% per year thereafter with mandatory retirement at 57. If you go Federal you would be brought in at GS-7 Step 1 probably and then automatic yearly promotions to GS-9. After that you will gain one step per year for steps 1-3. Steps 4-7 are 2 years each and the remainder are 3 year intervals.

One exception to the Salary is the US Park Police... They are on a different pay system due to having Presidential Protection duties which gets them off of the GS pay system.

Municipal/State Retirement= at least 2.5% of a considerably higher salary per year.

Just food for thought if you are the type to look down the road a bit....
