Default Budget friendly 20g shotgun?

Looking for a budget friendly 20g shotgun suitable for trap, skeet, occasional bird hunting...for my wife. Any suggestions? under $400...or cheaper is even better.

if you're lucky, an old 20ga Beretta semi (AL2 thru 303 series), or a Rem 1100, both will be around the 400 range.

Otherwise,New:

the Weatherby SA-08 makes a decent option. One shooting buddy has it and loves it.

Also: CZ 720; have handled one that was jamming and was all gummed up (new owner shot the gun out of the box and had never cleaned it...luckily I had some cleaning supplies that day...her husband's 712 worked fine)

Got me a 20g Baikal for $99 at Big 5. It works but it's light in weight, that could be good as me wife likes that. Shoots as good as anything so far. I just poped off the pistol grip end cap there and put in all the used lead pellets it would hold. Only about 1/3 pound but I'm hoping it will reduce the recoil and quit making a raw spot on my thumb where the trigger hits me on detonation. Got two, a 410 also with no problems yet. Hey, for $99 why not see if we can tolerate the recoil? Now we have two beater shotguns if we decide to move up. They can rattle around the bottom of our Gregor aluminum boat while hunting and who cares? Not us anyway.

How 'bout an 1100 in 20 ga...New skeet barrel, good wood. $400. She's been a safe-queen for a few years but gets oiled/waxed about 4 times a year...not something that needs to go quickly, but if it will help you out what the hey.

email me via calguns.net if you have interest.

Just an fyi...trap and skeet barrels are pretty different...trap needs a tight choke, skeet relatively loose. If you're definitely interested in both, find a gun with interchangeable chokes. That said, skeet (at least to me) is far better practice if your ultimate goal is killing birds than trap.

If you're thinking of shooting waterfowl, I'd recommend 12 ga.

The shot gun -Hanko is offering above ^^^ is a good choice, that's a good price too. Buy a Full choke barrel in the future and you are all set (~$150). The 1100 is known to be a soft shooter.

For a little bit over budget you can get an Escort 20 gauge semi auto. The 20 gauge semi is new this year, however the 12 gauge version has been around for quite a few years. Reviews of the 12 gauge are all favorable. Same with the current 20 gauge reviews. My wife decided it was time she got her own shotgun. This is the one we are getting. We pick it up this weekend from the 10 day wait. Looking forward to good things from this gun. The 26" synthetic version with 3 chokes is under 500.

Your inquiry is for a 20 ga. Do you WANT an auto?

How about the old tried and true, reliable 870 in 20? If your wife is on the smallish side you can get it in a "youth" size. Used, very affordable, new, under $400.

Mossberg 500b can be found new for $200. I got my GF the youth model with shorter stock. It also comes with interchangable chokes. Spend cash saved on gear & equipment.

The Correct Answer is:

Remington Model 870 Wingmaster - 28" Bbl./Modified choke.

Now... What was the Question...?

Default Rem Express 870 20ga on sale Big5 $336

Tell the manager you are "on the fence" because you are waiting for Mosin or Mauser to go on sale so you can save on DROS.

Can't go wrong with the 870. Especially a nice older model. Watch the sale threads.

You (and I and a bunch of others) missed this one for $350 -

Either a Mossberg 500 or be rem870 would be a good gun.

I agree!
I have two Mossbergs (1-12ga, 1-20ga) used primarily for bird hunting and have not any complaints with either of them.

No, the correct answer in that same gun/barrel combo with Rem chokes... So you have some versatility...
