Default AR15 5.56 24inch barrels

I'm interested in changing my 18inch DPMS fluted SPR 1:8 barrel for a 24inch heavy bull barrel 1:7 or 1:8 twist. Which companies are known to have accurate barrels (1 moa or less), and how much am I looking at?

I think Wilson makes near all the long stainless BB's.

My RRA with a 24" shoots way better than me and I can still easily group under an inch.

You can also get Krieger Stainless($418.20) and Douglas Premium Air-gauged Stainless($295.80) barrels from Compass Lake Engineering

this thread has just changed, since the complete upper is going back to it's orginal owner.

i have a stag 2ht upper, and want to change the barrel out to one of those barrels mentioned above. how hard is it to take my stock 16inch barrel, and install one of those barrels on my stag 2ht upper. any additional parts or tools that i need to buy?

Do you have one of those multi-tools? Just gotta punch out the gas tube and use that tool to take off the barrel. You can borrow mine saturday if you like.

Default upper

I have a DPMS upper with 24 in fluted SS 1 in 8 twist barrel from the group buy a while back. It shoots sub MOA with factory Hornady ammo with 52-55 grn bullets. And my reloads with Hornady 52 grn BTHP Match bullet over 24 grn of Varget can easily do half MOA at 100 yards.

Don't know if they make most of them.......but RRA are guaranteed to shoot an inch or less...........

Plus, you need to check the headspace when installing a barrel.

Just easier to get the complete upper.

Not with an AR. Headspace is set when the factory/gunsmith/barrel maker installs the barrel extension. The barrel extension is a permanent part of the barrel (once installed properly).

That is true in theory. In practice, it is always a good idea to check headspace. Especially if you are using a bolt that didn't come with the barrel.

You will need a free float tube. Depending on which one you pick, you may need a special wrench to mount it. If you want match accuracy, you will probably want to get a foot/lbs torque wrench, and of course an upper receiver block and action wrench.

If you are only doing one, I agree you should sell your upper and buy a complete from WOA or another maker.

Longer handguard system
Rifle gas tube
Gas block for the bull barrel if it's not included on the barrel

Then a few of these tools:

It's not all that hard if you have all the tools.
There are some little tricks that professionals do that you won't find in the DIY threads.
I charge $40 to tear down and rebuild a complete upper.
This covers installation of ANY other parts as long as no machining is required.
I also have LOTS of other parts in-stock to fondle before you buy.

I really think 26" is just too long for .223. WOA and others make them to give match rifle shooters a longer sight radius with iron sights.

A 24" tube is about the maximum practical length, even when using a slower powder like N150 with heavier bullets.

I've got a 26" match upper from WOA and it's a little nose heavy for my tastes. I'd probably hack off 2 inches and just put a bloop tube on it if I ever decide to whip it out again.

thanks for the all info, but i changed directions again, and went bolt action 700 sps varmint 26inch for $480. can't beat that. plus, i still have like 3.5k bullets of Nosler 55gr that I need to use up, so it'll be perfect in the 700 sps.

I have a RRA upper receiver/bolt and 20" willson bull. I picked up an E.R. Shaw 16" 5.56 bull, low profile block and carbine gas tube. Do I need to check the headspace with that bolt and chamber combo?

That's what I'm waiting for (RRA 24" BULL)- and they use air-guaged Wilson BBL's. Can't say you could go wrong there! $290.00-24" 1/8".

Did you ask what the air-gauge pass/fail dimensions are for those barrels?

You can shove an air gauge down any barrel and call it "air-gauged".
You can just as easily ignore what the gauge actually reads, or set your acceptable range so high that every barrel passes the test.

You don't know how good a barrel is until you also know what the "air-gauged" acceptance level is.

Shilen and Douglas publish this on their websites.
That says a lot.

My air gauge:
