He needs to file a report and make a claim against his insurance and pay you.
You need to report it stolen to the local authorities

How will they know who the owner is "to come looking for"?

You should have been listed as a secondary victim on the original crime report your friend made with the local PD. If not call and have them add you via a supplemental report. This is done often and should not be a problem.

No idea if they would go through all that trouble though. Depends on the severity of crime they are investigating I would expect.

Yes - a police report needs to be filed first and then an examination if his insurance will pay out on it for you. They won't until start the process unless it has been reported and itemized as stolen.

However for everyone else on here on this kind of topic, please inform on the type of safe and how it was broken into.

Thanks.

Sorry folks, firearms are not always covered under insurance. Or have limited coverage. Personally, I have extended coverage for my guns so they are all covered.

Not for a rifle - long gun info is not reported to CA DOJ.

How about the legality of "lending"/ keeping a firearm at a friends house-or does this only apply to pistols? I thought you weren't allowed to loan, lend, give, etc. a non-c&r weapon to anyone at anytime unless through a dealer....

You can loan Long guns and pistols for 30 days. If it's a pistol they need a HSC.

That looks like the work of a sawzall. Hard to believe the steel was mild enough for a sawzall blade though.

cordless tools nowadays can do wonders.

Think your front door is tough? Imagine how long it will last against a cordless drill and cordless sawzall.

10 gauge steel... a handheld sawzall or grinder will do it.

I need to rethink my own setup holy cow! They can do that with a sawzall? How long would that take to cut that?

Looks like someone knew about the safe, what tools they needed, and where to cut into the safe. Not to mention how long the owner would be gone in order to finish the job.

The better question is what could have cut so cleanly without leaving abrasive dust and yet not be heard in the next county. (hint, cutting metal is LOUD) Looks like a sawsall, but still.

So much for safes being "safe". Considering most safes are just thin metal these days. Be much harder to cut a 1" thick double layered hardened steel vault. A bolted down safe wouldn't save it here.

I am so tired of theives having free reign in this state.

The bad guys got away with 2 pistols an AR... They tuned over every drawer in the house and didn't even touch the LED flat screens or an iMac sitting in the kitchen worth more... They even took the pelican case for the AR. The left some guns on the pool table which means they didnt have time or room for them...

Bet it was a circular saw with a diamond tipped blade. Look how straight the gouge is. The police report needs to be filed in the jurisdiction where the crime took place.

Where was the safe located? I would have though if your friend's garage or house was broken into he would have had a burglary report. Was there forced entry in the house? What did they use as point of entry?

If you know a plumber or electrician ask them about portable band saws. They are rediculous. Cut through 1/4 thick pipe in seconds like butter. Just plug them into an outlet and chew threw metal.

cutting metal is loud. but its not a noise that gets noticed.

definitely cut with a sawzall or something like that. way too clean to be a angle grinder

I thought the same thing... We were robbed a few years back. Since then I leave a hand written note inside my empty and unlocked pistol case that reads, "Dear Thief, just wanted to let you know that I don't leave my firearms at home anymore. I never leave home without them. You better hope your gone by the time I get back. Have a nice day... sincerely, the Homeowner."

That looks like a chop saw which would blaze thru that safe with the right blade. Scares me though, I've got the same safe.

Looked like the safe was in the garage. Bad place for one if you have nosy ***** people cruising by looking into your garage. If it wasn't in the garage, than someone knew it was in the house. Who 459's a house with chop saw in tow that makes a shizzload of noise? Unless they find a sawzall in the garage with the safe. That sucks.
