Default VA dental care....anyone get it?

I have eligibility for VA dental due to 100% service connection.

Has anyone here used the VA for dental? How is it? Which office have you been to?

Is it possible to get the VA to pay for a private dentist?

I go to the one in north hills at the sepulveda ambulatory care clinic. It is free but i have had a god awful experience. Unless you need a surgery all routine ( root canal, cleaning, crowns, etc) are done by first or second year residents. In approximately 8 years I've been through about five of them. It go so bad I stopped showing up and complained to the top. And the. I got an attending dentist to do my crown and such. If I were you for cleanings and such go outside. Unless you are broke like many of us vets and really have to go for expensive stuff. Maybe wherever you are will be better as the LA area has ucla on other dental school to feed the VA students dentist.

And they will only pay for private dentist if it is an emergency or their is some ultimate necessity that they have to send you outside. Such as the distance is just to great from you to them. But ven then they will probably not pay for it. And for emergency care it is also a pain as they get angry it wasn't pre-approved.

Sorry to hear.

My present case is I can either go to the VA or try to pay out of pocket. So, I have give them a shot.

When you complained who did you complain to? A director? Some kind of care advocate?

I told them I want to see the boss. And as far as regular dentistry there are 2 attending dr's. So I got who was ever in charge that day.

Patient advocate should be able to help; got my primary switched by P.A. in La Jolla by filling out a short form. My one and only experience with dental at LJ was good . . .

If you have nothing ..VA better than nothing ...

If you can pay OOP.

Do it...

VA tends to hire doctors who cant cut it in civil world
Or are brand new with no experience.
you cant sue them for a screw up.
there are good ones and then their gone.

West LA. VA afew years ago had a guy go to have a bad testicle
removed ...they. took out the healthy one.

Here are some open VA dental jobs. Are the salaries good enough for them to attract competent people?

So far, so good.

They got me in same day for some pain.

They're doing a crown for free and I am grateful for that as I'm sure it's not cheap out of pocket.

Also made me a night guard.

as much as i complained or will complain about VA dental i am greatful that they do crowns. i just got two done. and i just got implant surgery and all for no cost. which would have been a small fortune. i really just wish they would get better dentist at the VA not students.

I have had about 4 root canals and 1 extraction. It's amazing but I am very happy with the care I get out of Long Beach.

I think its always better to get the detailed information about a treatment before you to have it. This can be very helpful for you in understanding the process of treatment clearly.

After the 20+ years of Army dentist I have had, there is no way I would go to VA, unless there was absolutely no other choice.
