Default Pre-Ban AK-47

Is there any Preban AK-47 variant that isn't listed on the ban list?

Refer to the flowchart at the top of the home page. That will answer your questions. Learn it, know it, live it.

Some one will pop in with the exact model. Be prepared for some sticker shock if you ever find it.
A featureless WASR will give the same joy, at a fraction of the price.

Most "pre-ban" AKs are make/model listed during the Roberti-Roos AWB of 1989.

Outside of CA...
"pre-ban" AKs sell in the $1000-2500 range depending on importer/manufacturer & condition.

If you find a "pre-ban" AK that's off-list, they still need to be modified to be compliant with CA's assault weapons laws.

The MAK-91 (Chinese milled receiver with a longer & heavier air gauged barrel) is a post 1989 ban thumbhole stock AK without a bayonet lug or a threaded barrel. It is subject to 922R, unlike the pre 1989 guns that are not. There was a Yugo or Finnish AK model that was not on the Roberti Roos list because of a typo in the Gun Digest book, that the Legislature used to make their list, that omitted it. Not sure if it was added later to the SB-23 list. They missed the MAK-91 as it was a low production gun, so that missing Yugo or Finnish AK is probably unlisted also. Other rare guns like the HK-41 (semi version of the G-3 made before the HK-91) were missed also. Search on GunBroker & you may find some for sale. I was never a fan of the Finnish or Yugo AKs other than the .308 & 8mm RPK types.

There are a couple of rare/oddball .308 Valmets that aren't listed. Not cheap though.

So we can have the MAK 91 here in CA? As long as it is modified with BB and low cap mag? And 922r of course. Is that right? I didn't think any Norinco or Polytech weapons were allowed here.

Carl.

Carl.
Yes, the MAK-91 is legal if you make it featureless or use a mag lock with a 10 round mag. The MAK-91 is a post George H W Bush 1989 import ban gun, so it's 922R compliant as imported. Unsoeld/922R went into effect on 11/30/1990. MAK-91 stands for: modified AK 1991. If you lock the 10 round mag, you can add all the CA legal features you want without worrying about 922R. If you leave the mag unlocked & want to add features (which you can't do in CA post SB-23) then you have to worry about 922R. The heart of 922R is imported long guns with detachable high capacity military magazines. The MAK-91 was missed by Perata/Legislature in 1999, as it was a rare gun even new. They were more expensive also, so not too many got imported. The Legislature didn't read every issue of Shotgun News, so missed some things like the HK-41. You can still buy brand new Norinco guns in CA. The replica double barreled 12 ga "coach gun" by Norinco is cheap & legal. My Norinco M-14 is legal without the flash hider.
