Arrow Home Visits

Gents,

I'm prepping for a home visit and was wondering if anyone could offer any insight as to what this entails? Obviously, they are coming to my house, but are they going to be walking through every room and physically rifling through my personal belongings ala search warrant or is this more of a get invited inside, sit down in the formal living room, offer some tea/coffee, cookies and have a chat?

I don't have anything to hide but, I do have multiple firearms that are securely stored in racks throughout different places in the house and am somewhat concerned that maybe my BI might not be as enthusiastic about guns as I/we may be.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

TIA,

-JJ

CHP?

I think they do something like that.

What agency or area is it? Might help...

Most High quality Municipal Pd's do this. They will check out your house talk to family and neighbors. To kind of learn about you your situation and your story.

As I recall, the background investigator sat down with my wife and I, went over paperwork and discussed the job and answered questions. I didn't find it intrusive, and it gave him a chance to get an idea of home and family life. No he didn't root around.

I was impressed; they did send someone out to interview the neighbors of a house I hadn't lived at in 5-10 years. So yes a good department is very thorough, and no, they don't hire anyone.

I don't know who you're applying for, but I had multiple guns too, not the slightest issue.

I had a home visit prior to employment at my first LEO agency in 1998. They came by, I wasn't home, spoke with my room mate for 2 minutes and left.

It is not a search and destroy mission. They are looking for well rounded individuals who live like the average person. If your house is a fortified battle emplacement, they don't want you. If you are a pack rat hoarder, same thing. If your house looks like mall ninja headquarters you are not what they are looking for.

EVERY department I applied to did a home visit when I got to the background investigation stage as a police officer applicant. All were Orange County agencies, two were LA County.

Back when I was in college, I had a home visit to my on-campus apartment when I applied to a part time job as a Public Safety Aide at the local PD decades ago.

Some of the BI's didn't even bother going past the living room and simply sat down to ask a few questions and left. Most BIs do visit your neighbors for some quick questions on the same trip out there.

Just had one on Monday... He came in, sat down, went over my jacket, talked, then he left. We actually spent more time BSing than the interview.

Having said that, he did my background for my current department about three years ago. Non intrusive at all.

I would suggest making it look like you care. Maybe vacuum a bit...just saying.
