Question Model 29 & 629 .44 Magnum 8 3/8" barrels legal in California?

My father has been looking for a 44 magnum on gun broker but keeps seeing "Will not ship to CA" on all 8 3/8" 44's on auction. Is the long barrel revolver illegal in CA now?

Illegal? No.

However, it may not be on the "Safe handgun roster" that dictates what can be transferred through an FFL.

Lucky for us SW guys they can be converted to SA and can be transferred - you just may need to find an FFL in your area that can do it.

Also, you can use a middle man FFL for online purchases - I do it all the time.

Also, whether the firearm is legal in CA or not, there are a lot of idiots on Gun Broker that simply won't ship to CA at all, even parts, out of spite or disgust with CA; ridiculous, as there are several other states with laws just as backwards as we have it. They see CA as liberal central, which may be true, but they have a misguided attitude in taking it out of the firearm owners and enthusiasts of CA.

However, to give consideration where due, some sellers have done it because more than once, shipping to CA has backfired on them as the buyer from CA wasn't clear about the laws here (roster/AW laws) and purchased/bid anyway - where the gun then had to be sent back to the seller; so for the hassle, it was easier for them to avoid CA altogether.

Their loss I guess, as CA is STILL the largest purchasing market of any State in the Union.

Great. I guess we gun owners are considered insurgents too in this state.

Also, a S&W pre-29, 29(-0) or 29-1, are C&R and therefore roster exempt if you should find a willing seller on the auction sites.

I purchased a very nice 29-2 8 3/8" l.n.i.b. last year in a PPT, so they are out there, just not too easy to find.
