Default "The Ambush at Mill Creek"-Raahagues range

They started today with some side matches but the main events are tomorrow & Sunday over at Raahagues in Corona. Here's the schedule:

http://www.thecowboys.org/AMB2012/Ambush12Schedule.pdf

I'll be spectating tomorrow & taking some photos. I have an 1872 Open Top that I can't disassemble to clean the grease out & only have 1 box of ammo

Schedule makes it sure look interesting. Any kind of background on the event? Seems like it would be perfect for some scenario based stuff.

I've been wanting to check out CAS. It seems as though every vid I see online, they use 2a pistols to compete. I've only got one SA pistol. Is there competitions that involve only one pistol?

I don't know too much about it, I found out about it maybe 2 weeks ago. I know that they have shoots there at Raahagues once a month but this looks to be one of their bigger events of the year.

If you don't go this weekend, I'll let you know. I haven't found a list detailing all the stages for this shoot. I hope they do since I too only have one single action revolver. Would love to do their '3-gun' type of events when I get a lever action rifle & a shotgun.

Edit: I think"Duelist involves one revolver. I know that one you cock & shoot with one hand but I don't know if you need a 2nd gun since there is double duelist.

I don't know where 'lead dispenser' is from but I hope he makes it to this. I found an older video of him at another event at Raahagues in 2006.

At most cowboy action shooting events, you will need 2 revolvers, a rifle and a shotgun. There are some clubs that may have a category with only 1 revolver, but not many. Duelist shooters cock the hammer and pull the trigger using one hand, but still use 2 revolvers. Most shooters hold the revolvers with both hands and use the weak hand thumb to cock the hammer. There are a lot of different categories to shoot in. One common misconception is that you are required to dress all out with cowboy hats, shirts, scarves, spurs, vest along with boots and everything else. Really all you are required to wear, minimum, is jeans and a long sleeved work shirt. Lots of shooters do enjoy wearing all of the other stuff, but it is not a requirement. And you don't have to walk around talking like Festus or Walter Brennan either. It's a lot of fun. Mark

Ahh, you do need two revolvers, okay. I think some time ago I was sort of put off because I thought you had to dress up but I love the speed of the shooting & it just looks like a ton of fun in general. I wouldn't mind a cowboy get up at all, actually I was set on a Cimmaron 1897 Winchester clone but I'm still a bit discourage with all the parts the gun is loaded with so I'm curious to see some Stoger's and other side by sides in action.

A lot of people have had the idea that there are the "clothing police" when it comes to what you wear. Over the years I've seen stories about some Civil War Reenactor groups and other groups where they point out that the thread in your outfit, or a button is wrong. It's nothing like that at all. Some people are involved with SASS because they are more interested in the clothing. Some are more interested in the shooting. But, everyone is having fun. The 97 Winchester pumps and their clones are popular with a lot of shooters. Double barrel shotguns seem to be gaining a little bit though. In the last few years more shooters are getting higher quality double barreled guns and having them set up for cowboy shooting.
Most clubs have their monthly matches. Many of the clubs will also have their once a year big match. If they have a dinner for everyone you will see some people really do have some fancy clothes,, both the men and the women. But again, you can wear your regular cowboy outfit that you shoot in to the dinner. Mark

I did CAS for awhile a few years ago. Those Socal CAS shooters are good. Many folks are not in it for the competiiton though.

Here is Lead Dispencers website that has some shooting videos on it. There are some folks running each of the firearms types you generally see in CAS:

Have fun with it,
Keith

I processed a few pictures. Apparently, I took A LOT of photos haha so this will take a while. I'm done for the day with the few I'm posting here. Was pretty hard to get good shots trying to find open spacewithout timers in the way, other shooters, their cool wooden seat/gun holder things, etc. but it was the best I could do. There were some cool people there.

Thanks! No prob. I'd go tomorrow(er, today) but think I'm going to sleep in & get my *** on a treadmill afterwards. It's funny, I really stuck out in the crowd the majority of people were dressed up & then there was me with my yellow t-shirt and dslr around my neck

Here is a video of me shooting there on sunday.

There is a new shooters clinic at the monthly matches, the guns and the ammo for the class are provided by the club. I believe that the cost for the class is $25.

Woahhh, you did great! That was a stage where I could not see what the course was all too well so thanks for that vid. I really wanted a Winny 97 clone but I think I might go with a Stoeger coach gun for these matches. I can't tell, how are you ejecting your shells? Someone was telling me about new shooters clinics although he was telling me about The Cajon Cowboys club. That's awesome that they provide gun AND ammo.

Thank you. Some people prefer to use the 97 and some prefer the double. I would strongly suggest trying both for a while before you decide which to buy. The strange thing about cowboy shooters is if you show up to a match without all of the guns required there will be a line of people offering to let you shoot theirs. Not many people start out with all of the guns right off the bat and borrowing for a little while is a great way to see what you shoot best with. As far as ejecting the shells, in SASS it is not legal to have ejectors on a sxs but you can have extractors. The chambers are honed and polished and there is a technique called shucking which is basically a quick way of dumping the shells out of the gun.
