Default Rimfire MOA Match (added MOA Tgts for Iron Sights)

This is different than the monthly matches held here and not in competition with that match. The purpose is to provide a forum for shooters to improve their shooting skills, test their equipment and exchange ideas with fellow shooters on what works and what doesn't. In truth you are competing against yourself with your shooting equipment.

The goal is to shoot two five shot groups whose average is MOA or Sub-MOA. This is a good test of your shooting ability, precision of your rifle and your other shooting equipment.

Shooting Rules:

1. Any rimfire rifle and ammunition is allowed, no limit on modifications.
2. Any sight system is allowed but scope is highly recommended.
3. Any shooting position is allowed, benchrest, prone, kneeling, standing, use of sling, etc.
4. Shooting will consist of two 5-shot groups (must be on the same target).
5. Groups will be measured between the two bullet holes that are the farthest apart. Measure from the outside edge of one bullet hole to the inside edge of the other bullet hole that is the farthest away.
6. Measure and record the group sizes on the target, add those together and divide by 2. That's the average group size. Record that on the target as well as the rifle, sight type and ammo used.
7. Post the target in the this thread.
8. No limit on the number of targets that can be shot.

I will record each shooters scores in the first post of the thread as the targets are posted. The information will include: Shooters Username, Time/Date of Target, Rifle/Ammo, Group Size.

For clarification of MOA it is 1/2 @ 50yds and 1 @ 100yds.

50 and 100 yd targets are attached to this post.

NEW!! 50 and 100yd Iron Sight Targets added.

Credit: This idea came from the .17HMR Sub-Forum on RimfireCentral.com.

There is also a sample, scored target attached.

PM me for questions/comments.

You can add JPG photos as attachments to a post or insert photos from websites like Photobucket or Flickr (I use this one). Also there is an "Insert Image" icon at the top of the window where you enter a post. Its a yellow square with what looks like a mountain in the square.

Yes this is ongoing. There will be no change in targets. I'll just update my original post with the data from the targets that folks post. Makes it real easy on me and everyone. I am hoping that we get good participation from our fellow shooters, if not it just dies on the vine. Its all about measuring and making improvements in our shooting ability. Looking forward to your targets. Love my .17HMR.

I'll be checking the thread every evening (most of the time) to make updates.

Shot the first targets today. Two with my Marlin 925M (.22WMR) and one with my Savage 93R17 (.17HMR).

Izzy, I think you measured that first Marlin target wrong, giving yourself a larger number than you actually shot. You measured the group on the right from outside edgr to outside edge, not outside to inside as you suggested in the rules. I think you are just being modest. Nice shooting on all 3 targets. I need to better learn how to shoot my .22 in the wind.. But if I make it to the range some time soon, I will definitely participate.

Thanks for catching that, pretty sad when the rule maker (me) can't follow the rules. Good luck shooting.

Nice shooting. I thought I was the only one that was going to do this. I think your 100yd average is .95", less than MOA so both the 50 and 100yd groups are great. Thanks for shooting. Keep at it.

facn650, great shooting. Sub-MOA, don't sell that rifle. The .17HMRs are so accurate its almost unfair to shoot against a .22lr. I went out yesterday but with a 20mph wind I couldn't hit a barn.

Yeah at 100 yards I can see my 22 drop in on the target. A .17HMR trajectory is fairly flat at 100. Izzy we should separate .22's and .17's just because at distance a .17 blows a .22 out of the water.

I'll do that, after all its my match and I can proclaim/invoke executive privledge. But there are no winners here, only MOA and non-MOA shooters.

If that's the case why did we segregate the 17HMR to a different caliber/class? I'm guessing the 17HM2 will go with the 17HMR. Izzy?

USMCCHET is correct, we are competing against MOA which does not change from caliber to caliber, not each other. I separated the calibers more for information purposes than anything else. From a quality standpoint I believe that .17HMR and .17HM2 ammo is just inherently more accurate than mid-grade .22 match ammo. If one was to move up to Eley Tenex then I believe that the accuracy gap will close quickly.

In my opinion .22 ammo is a great round for 50yd shooting but @100yds it takes a very good rifle, very good ammo and a great shooter to get MOA groups from any .22 caliber rifle. The again, that's the challenge for us.

If one shoots MOA at any distance that is way above average for most rifles and shooters in any caliber. The most difficult MOA shooting that I have tried is @ 25yds. That's 5 shots in .25", tough to do.

My intention is to shoot MOA with most of my rifles ( or at least try) and then attempt to reduce those group sizes and track my progress in this thread.

Nice shooting, gotta love the .17 caliber. I'm keeping my desire for a .17HM2 at the top of the list. Only rimfire I don't own yet.

OK, does that mean making it a "Sticky"? If so, not sure how to do that. Also there is only three of us participating or at least only three of us posting targets. Wish there were more.

No problem, use the 50yd target. Minute of angle (MOA) at that distance is 5 shot group measuring 1/4". I thought about that originally but its a tough, tough group to shoot. Please remember you are not competing with others, just the goal of shooting MOA. Please post your targets no matter what the group size. There are currently only 3 of us shooting, or at least posting the targets.

All others are invited to shoot the 25 yds as well, I will also. Just remember to not zero on the crosshair on the target, shoot above or below or right or left of it so you don't obliterate your aimpoint.

Thanks Izzy. I'm missing a WMR.
Good tip about aiming at something other than the crosshairs. The Nikon crosshairs are too thick and this technique will make it easier to hit consistently.

I don't get out to the range nearly as often as I would like, but hopefully I'll have a target posted within the next month. (only option that is really viable for me currently is ASR, and I live in Anaheim -_-)

As soon as we finish our move and I can print some targets I plan on trying this out. This would be a great reference for those looking to test out ammo in their rifles.

You know there is a rimfire range at prado that is 50 yards right? Its not ASR with all the steel fun and centerfire goodness, but just a quick run down the 91 and 71 and you are there.

And I have my targets printed out just need to get a free weekend to get out to prado and try my hand after I zero my scope. (Take off bushnell from savage combo, not perfect but I had it lying around.)

Pinned to the top, sticky, Izzy
this isnt a monthly match
this is to show each other how our rifles are doing MOA-wise
I think this is a good idea but not something I will do all the time
I would like to see how my rifle does over time and with different ammo

A sad showing but I wanted to participate. My vendor shipped me the center fire scope instead of the rim fire and fixed 4x with fat hunting crosshairs just doesn't work. Only putting this as a baseline till my good scope shows up and we try again

How well could you see the crosshairs with the 4x at 50 yards?

Not a damn bit. The Baraska crosshairs just blanked out everything
