Default Ugly old girl in purrdy new dress

Yes, she's a Mosin 91/30. Whacked 4.5 inches off her barrel. The rest you can pretty much see for yourself. I love her so much...

That used to be a really nice laminated stock.

Best things I can say about it are:

(1) At least it wasn't a hex or an M91 or something

and

(2) Thanks for making mine just that little bit rarer.

That's what they said about Enfields and 1903's and K98k's and Garands and etc.

They're only cheap guns because production was payed for years ago and they're still coming in. When they dry up, they'll go for every bit as much as all the other milsurps.

They're already starting to. When I bought my M44 it was $60 for an M44, an M91, an M38, or an M91/30. Go take a gander at what M44's go for now.

Your scout mount is sitting on top of your rear sight? What mount is that? And is the rear sight still usable in that configuration? For that matter, how is your cheekweld with the optic mounted so high?

Enfields 17 million plus built, M1 Garand 6.5 million built, Kar 98K let's say 14.7 million built. Kinda not close to 37 million. I'm sure it will dry up, over time. But it doesn't make it any more rare. Or rarer?! Lol

WOW! I knew the purist would be all up in arms over her, but crap, that was much faster than I expected. The original stock was a super common '43 Russian. I actually traded this one for it foom a nice young man from TFL in NY. This gun was a 99$ BiG 5 beater, which was also purchased with a much nicer M91/30 which I have kept (and will keep) all original (to appease the purists of course).

No idea what was used it recrowning her. Paid my gunsmith to do it.

Yes! Thinking about taking her, or my all original Russian SKS (no Bubba for all you C&R Nazis) to that place in Mo Val off the 60. Love to go up north, but don't have the funds right now. And thanks for the tasteful comment LLNT- the mount works great because I actually listened to the guys a BrassStacker and installed per their instructions. Only shot is once so far at 50 yards:

The three shot in the circle were the first three shooting right handed (how I normally shoot), and was so impressed whith it that I shoot the last two rounds in the mag left handed... And ruined a pretty good group. Looking forward to taking it to another range soon with 200 yard field.

Why not just get an M38 instead of cutting down the M91?

yes- i can and do still use OG sights
BrassStacker.com
cheekweld- not gonna lie- very weird at first. Getting used to it. Might invest in in some type of riser in near future.

That can't be very comfortable to shoot for any lenght of time with your scope at twice high ring height. That's got to hurt the neck and that mount will put your eye out.
Kudo's for doing your own work but you have reached the pinnacle of bubbadom on that
poor Mosin sir. Congrats ... I think.

I have one that had been "Bubba Richard'd" that I bought a while back with a stock like that for $49. Got a true M38 stock fro $40 and if it hadn't been for the '03 springfield front sight that was on it, looked like a true M38

Nice job, if it makes you happy and shoots good then congratulations. Round receiver 91/30s are going to be around for years to come. I have a rough one that shot like crap (.314 bore and full of tool marks) so I transformed it into something I liked a lot better.

M38s are only a little bit more than M91/30s, right?

I sold a pair a few years ago and it actually took quite some time to get rid of them at $100 a piece. They were really great condition, too (imported by Aztec Arms out of Ocala, FL).

M38s are much more prized and valuable than 91/30s. Today you could sell each of those carbines in under a day for 3 times the money you got back then.

G-Man WC-not really, I only need one shot- and have been training for that one shot. I find it very cool to sit back and with the knowledge (and original mindset) that I can peg 'yotes at the short range of of 100-175 yards with this rifle. My original intent for this build was a varmint sniper with a short range of 200-100 yards- negating the use of a shotgun for aforementioned 100- 175 yard shots.

I'd love her even more if you put on an ATI stock and tapped the receiver for a real scope mount, bent the bolt. JMO.

I think it looks nice. My only issue is how functional the scope is at that height.

If you are happy with it, then that is great and that is all that matters. Its not like its a rare gun and a piece of history is gone. Ignore all the flamers and purists, its a free country......cough cough..

I think it looks nice. My only issue is how functional the scope is at that height.
Again, it's taking some getting used to, but I dig it so far.

First off I'd say "to each his own." Good job with what you did and I hope you like the outcome.

That said... simply in my opinion that scope mount looks.. umm.. "interesting." I understand you still use the stock sights.. but for a $100.00 for the rifle I would have simply purchased 2... one to go "full sniper" and 1 for Iron sights.

That stock however is sexy.. with the time and money you invested I would axe the iron sights and stick with the scope and get rid of the ghastly scope mount. Sadly its a great looking weapon, but that scope mount steals the show... in a bad way IMO.
