Default Vortex Viper Pst Vs SWFA SS For 1000yard w/AR15

Now that it comes with the free 1-6, should I go with the SWFA 5-20 or a Viper PST?

I would go with the Bushnell HDMR or a Used Night Force before the SS. Unless you really need a 1-6.

SWFA unless you need the weight savings from the PST. I'd take a Razor over the SWFA though.

What's barrel length? Running 80 SMK? Gotta be some screaming hot rounds to reach 1000.

I second that , i'm certainly a vortex customer for life . I have one on my rem 700 custom build . Plan on getting one for my AR for 3 gun. I have a sparc which is the best red dot for under 400 bucks around . ( and it costs half that )

Being a total Vortex fan boy... its hard for me to say this since I love the Viper PST line a lot... but I feel SWFA deal has Vortex beat.

This might help you make your decision.

The SWFA scopes are typically compared to higher end glass than the PST series. I am also considering this deal... 1-6x for my Recce AR and 5-20x for my 24" BB target AR.

I really hope the SWFA scopes are as good as the reviews say.

I gather most people here haven't actually looked through the SWFA 5-20x50mm?

The Viper PST and the SWFA shouldn't even be compared. They're not really in the same league.

If you want to make a comparison, compare the Razor HD or something like the Nightforce F1 to the SWFA. I have as I own the F1 and SWFA and have spent time using the Razor... I also owned the Viper PST before I upgraded to the SWFA.

The SWFA 5-20x trounces the Viper in every category. However... having said that, the Viper is a pretty awesome scope at its price point. It's just that with the SWFA sale going in, the SWFA would look mighty tempting right now.

The one thing I didn't check was to see if there is more internal adjustment on the SWFA over the Viper. Depending on your mount, might be important to you at 1000 yards.

I've looked through both a SWFA 5-20x50 HD and a Viper PST. Both have their pros and cons.

The SWFA, I find the glass pretty nice, it resolves a bit better than my nightforce, and noticeably better than the PST. The eyebox seemed to be a bit more forgiving than the PST. The adjustments are a bit stiff for the mag ring and the parallax adjustment. I also found the parallax adjust and the illumination on the same knob to be a little awkward. Turrets adjustments had a pretty tactile feel to it but it bit light. Otherwise it's a fantastic scope.

The Viper PST's glass is pretty good in its own regard but not nearly as good as the SWFA HD. For some odd reason the Vipers I've looked through had a slight pinkish hue to it. I prefer the reticle options on the PSTs for both MIL and MOA, the hasmarks seemed easier to use than the diamond "mildots." The mag zoom and parallax adjustment was easier to use, the turret adjustments felt somewhat similar to the SWFA if I recall.

Both scopes seem to track well, both owners seemed to be quite happy with their scopes. It really just comes down to personal preference. Both will get a .308 out to 1,000.

Of course, YMMV.

Agreed.

BTW I recently updated my Nightforce F1... I think either I got a really good sample, or Nightforce has updated their glass because I actually found my F1 to produce a better image than the SWFA at the same mag. I will be receiving another SWFA 5-20 so I will make a comparison between the two SWFAs.

Not that it honestly matters... they're all clear enough, Viper PST included to do the job fine.

What I care about is tracking and reliability.

I'm with you... i know a lot of people like the SWFA reticle but i'm not a big fan personally... but they'll do just fine. The MLR2 on the F1 is just about as close to perfect as I've found... although a combination of the two Razor Mil reticles would be "perfect".

Ok threadjack over.
