Default Bulk Ammo in California (Bay Area)

I was under the impression that the prevention of shipping ammo into the republic of California had been lifted. But when I try to order ammo from Cheaperthandirt.com it approves regular boxes of ammo (20 or 50 rd. boxes) but informs me that the 500 rd. box I want to order cannot ship due to local restrictions. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can find out what the restrictions are? Or a layman's answer would be great, I suck at translating legal-eze.

Thanks.

There could be a city ordinance where you live that prohibits bulk ammo sales, or it could be that Cheaperthandirt has just written off Californians as customers because of CTDs ignorant understanding of California laws.

Possible is a city regulation? Did you send them an email to find out? I might suggest you do this first. It would be interesting to see how they reply anyhow.

Here is the reply I got from Cheaper (CS name redacted):

@cheaperthandirt.com

1:37 PM (4 minutes ago)

to me

Gregory,

Bulk sales are not prohibited to CA.

Sincerely,

Depends where in the bay you live. SF county I think you are out of luck, same with parts of Alameda.

AFAIK there are no restrictions on amounts, anywhere.

Some cities want retail sales in their city to be accompanied by collecting buyer information, and a few on-line retailers have chosen to believe that means no internet/mail-order sales into those cities.

If a retailer doesn't want to take your money, find one that does want it.

OK, not helpful maybe, but honestly, I haven't found anything at CTD that I couldn't get for the same price or less elsewhere.

CTD is notorious for not supporting CA gun owners and restricts the sale of many, perfectly legal items.

I have not had any issues getting bulk ammo sent to SF/Alameda counties. There are some vendors that state they won't ship, but that is due to their misunderstanding of past attempts at restrictions. CTD is fully aware if the current situation and just chooses not to support CA.

I bet if you tell us exactly what it is you are looking for, the CTD deal can be beat.

Thanks everyone!

I am looking specifically for 500 to 1000 rds. of 45 ACP. It's for range time, so I'm not picky. It will be going through an HK45, which I understand is not a finicky weapon so any old ammo will work, though I prefer a 230 grain bullet.

Any noteworthy deals would be welcome. I'd be glad to support any recommended vendors. I'll start directing my searches away from CTD.

Thanks.

In the Bay Area the only two places I believe actually have restrictions on mail order ammo are SF City/County and Alameda Co.

I am up in Marin and while a few vendors (CTD and SG to name the biggest culprits) wont ship there I've never had an issue with any others.

I do most of my online ammo shopping with SGAmmo, Palmetto State Armory, Freedom Munitions and Cabela's. No problems with these vendors and many others.

Worst comes to worst get a mailbox outisde of your area and have it shipped there. Safer than leaving it on your doorstep anyway.

Alameda County is news to me.

As far as I know there are no county wide restrictions here in the Great and Tranquil County of Alameda. I've never been denied...

The problem is Cheaper than Dirt... CTD is, as my 10yo daughter would say, "awkward"...

I found 1000 rds of 230 grain Lawman TMJ for $389 (total, free shipping) at Ammoman. Is that pretty good? Anyone had a bad experience with them? I've never ordered there before.

Last time I was at Reeds they had speer lawman 45 acp @ 339/1000 + tax. Beats a lot of the online deals when you figure shipping.

If your in the bay area might be worth a drive.

Palmetto State is shipping me 500 rnds .40, 2000 of .22 (that doesn't really count since a small box is already 500!) and 25 shotshells (yeah, I know, 2000 of one thing, 25 of another! LOL).

So it's not their BULK ammo, it was 10 boxes of 50 for the .40 and 4 boxes of 500 of the .22lr. But they didn't balk at shipping it to San Mateo.

I wouldn't call 500 rounds bulk... I ordered / received 1000 rounds via mail from Midway USA it must be a company policy issue with Cheaper than Dirt.

CTD has been hassled by Kalifornia authorities over some gun and parts sales. As a business they shouldn't have to spend extra effort to complete a sale that has a thin profit margin anyway. They did promise me a list of guns they WOULD sell here but it never materialized. Stuff CTD wouldn't sell me came overnight from Brownells. So find someone you can do business with and put CTD catalogs in the bathroom. I usually buy enough ammo at my local gun show to last me 6 months anyway...and no shipping!

I've never seen anything on CTD that I couldn't find for a lower price somewhere else, especially after shipping costs are factored in.

Edit: by the way, with sales changing and soooo many online vendors, I find these two sites pretty helpful to get me started when I'm in the market for ammo (unless you become loyal to a particular vendor, like I mostly am for reloads now, that is)... and I'm linking to the .45 ACP pages since you mentioned that, but obviously you can search for most calibers here:

http://gun-deals.com/ammo.php?caliber=.45+ACP
http://www.ammoengine.com/find/ammo/.45_ACP

With a San Francisco zip, it is hit and miss on internet sales.

Default Wrong ZIP

I wonder can ammo shipment be "held for pickup" at a UPS office of your choice. Might be a way around having the wrong ZIP.

Gigantic thumbs down to CTD!! Go to a vendor who values our hard earned dollars!! There are many bulk ammo vendors who'll ship to you... Search CGN for some who advertise on this very forum their bulk deals.. I recall weaponsworld.com...

Aren't local ordinances regarding mail order sales interfering with interstate commerce?

I don't understand CTD...but then who does? One time I was trying to put together an ammo order and believe it or not, certain brands could and could not be shipped to my address. Seriously, one brand and not the other?

Anyway, to the OP, keep trying different vendors, maybe try your work address if they'll let you receive parcels!

as far as ordering from CTD, I am sure that if you look around you can find cheaper prices elsewhere you just have to look around, there are plenty of smaller vendors out there.
and be sure to keep your eye on the FS section as you might just get lucky & find someone selling locally.

Since you mentioned that you are interested in .45ACP, you may want to check bulletman911. He's a calgun contributor and an awesome seller. Sure, his ammo are reload's, but I've not had any issue using them. Beside, the price is really good.

I've ordered from Ammoman.com, Natchez Shooter's Supply, and Midway USA, who ever was cheaper. Gets drop shipped to my front door where my wife leaves the boxes for me to retrieve when I get home 'cause she can't lift them.

Lately, I think WallyWorld has the best prices. Drive in and buy.........

I've had a lot of ammo shipped to me by CTD over the years. Most of the other deep discount ammo places on line don't carry the shotgun shells I use for clays, CTD does and at about the best price around. If Wally doesn't have them when I need to stock up I order a few flats from CTD and never an issue.

Sounds like a city ordinance like Los Angeles has. They want a CDL and fingerprint for all ammo sales; and bar all internet shipments of ammo into the city.
That's so the gang bangers can't get ammo without them knowing it.....not that ANYONE in L.A. (bad guy, good buy, numbskull) doesn't know that driving to an adjacent city or having the ammo shipped to your buddy in the OC or Ventura is the solution.
Good move L.A. You Dumb*****es. Now, me a law abiding citizen can't get cheap ammo deals online. You RAT BA$^()^S.

Damn, I'm ranting tonight. I better put down the bong and watch Red Tails..... (J/K)
