Default My new Glock 34 budget race/match "build"

So my good friend Jason has decided we need to start shooting pistol matches (USPSA).
I tried using my S&W TRR8 .357 (8 shot), but found out I could only shoot 6 times and not 8...so that kinda made that pistol useless for this game.

Hmm....what to do...

Jason is running a Glock 35 and I almost went that route, but decided since I have a few other 9mm (lots of ammo already), plus I have a Glock 17 and a bunch of old pre ban mags from back in the day...that I would go with a Glock 34.

Right away I knew I would not be happy with it in stock form. And shooting in limited class will force me to work at being better (I can talk myself into anything and justify it as well!).
So I ordered a bunch of parts and decked it all out. I know...it aint no 1911 race gun...but for a budget set up I think it will work until I.. a) learn to shoot a pistol better and faster...b) decide if I am going to stick with it or not...and c) I save my pennies for a STI or something cool like that.

Shopping list:

Warne Tactical rear sight
Dawson fiber optic front sight
JP extended mag release
JP mag well
Glocktiggers.com the "Edge" trigger
Hellweg limited holster
BladeTech mag holders
Arredondo mag extensions
Wilderness instructors belt

And here it be:

Why didn't you just shoot the G17? That's a cool set up and where did you get the Hellweg? You shoot limited minor with a G34, cool choice I went with a G35 with a LW 40-9. Tuning and buying race parts is fun!

You are right...but I shoot 600 and 1000 yard matches quite often and having top shelf gear can make up for some lack of skill. Ask me how I know!

IMO, the G34 is a better gun for Production than Limited, due to minor PF.

I've discovered that shooting minor (ie; 9mm) is OK in Limited IF you have high capacity magazines. The advantage of minor of major in Limited is the ability to possibly shoot a whole stage with one or no reloads (example CZ-75 with 19 round magazines in 9mm).

If you are in CA (like tha CAL part of calguns!) then you are PROBABLY going to shoot L-10 due to 10 round mag limitations, and in that case, you have neutered the gun by eliminating the only advantage (OK, minus recoil and shot speed IF you are good enough for it to make a difference) of a 9mm in Limited division.

But since OP has pre-bans from this G17, he's good to go in Limited.

I think a "budget" USPSA rig which includes a G34 would simply be;
1) Cheap but stiff belt
2) 6 magazines
3) Decent holster

ie; no mods for the G34! I wouldn't call the OP's rig "budget" except for the belt. I would call it "awesome".

The reason I don't like the belt is because that belt you need to thread through your belt loops, and unless you have clip on mag holders and holster, that means you ahve to thread the belt loops and then thread on the mag holders, then the belt loops, then the holster.

I bought a cheapo ($9.99) "Voodoo Tactical" duty belt from a surplus store. It is a stiff 2 1/4" (Which is really wide for some of mag holders/holsters loops FYI) and is an inner/outer belt system like the $50 CR Speed and Double Alpha belts. It's great! Very stiff and I can unclip it and take the whole "rig" off my body in a second.

I started with a belt similar to the Wilderness belt, but got sick of threading it in and out of my belt loops with the mag holders/holster that I have.

This. You are already at a huge disadvantage if you plan to be competitive.

The Glock isn't the problem. Plenty of people do well with non STI/SVI guns in limited/limited-10.

Unless you plan on shooting all Alphas, you will always take a back seat to the person shooting major power factor (165,000+).

I am sure someone will come along and bring up good ol' BJ Norris who shoots minor in single stack, but that guy is a professional match shooter who probably puts at least 500-1000 rounds downrange a day.

If I was you I would shoot the 34 in production or 3 gun.

If you want to shoot a Glock in Limited, go with a 22/24/35 chambered in .40.

Zone Major Minor
A 5 5
B 4 3
C 4 3
D 2 1
M -10 -10
NS -10 -10

Those points add up quick.

You have THE gun for production...but for limited? Eh. Hey as long as you have fun.

At the end of the day, don't let it stop you. Have fun. That's what it is all about anyways. I am just saying, if you take it more serious, the .40 is necessary.

You could save all those extensions, the magwell, and the mag release for a future 35/24/22 purchase!

I shot a Glock before my STI. I still suck. LOL. The STI didn't help me get better. Shooting more and more did.

I run my G17's or G34 in Limited Minor with 23 rounds per stick (+140mm) all the time, but it never makes for the point loss because there is never a stage that has so little transition time that the the L10 guys can't do a mag change in between. Occasionally this could benefit an Open shooter, but not Limited. The point difference is just too great for C's and D's.

The rules for the "Revolver Division" says only 6 rounds loaded in the gun at a time. If you have an 8 round revolver, you have to shoot in a different division if you want to load all 8 rounds.

You have to be GOOD to shoot a revolver in any non-revolver division. It's a pleasure to see a good revolver shooter shoot and reload with moon clips!

I think most people shooting revolvers use the S&W .45 ACP 625. The short, fat stubby .45 ACP rounds, in a moon clips are a lot easier to load than .357 or .38 special's long thin cartridges.

It's just part of the rules for that division, to make it fair for most revolver shooters.

Even when I shot limited minor with my G34 with Dawson extensions, I still had to reload once on 90-95% of the stages I shoot.

I still only reload about once with my STI (20+1).

That minor advantage is simply not there in limited.

In single stack yea sometimes, but not in limited.

Gotcha. Like I said, capacity is the only advantage of shooting minor vs major in limited, unless you can shoot much better with 9mm than .40+.

With a 9mm glock, it's better to shoot production because the striker trigger somehow fits into production.

The only reason I'd shoot L or L-10 is simply so I could shoot my CZ-75 SA, which has a nice trigger, but doesn't fit in any other division. A Glock 34 fits in production so it is more competitive there, since everything is scored minor there.

With the OP's gun, in production he can only load up 10 rounds in those high caps.

Yup. Revo and Single Stack guys get a high five from me.

It's not for me. Too much damn reloading. Their stage break down is totally different too, 'specially when someone designs the stage to be more friendly to 10+ capacity guns.

I like your choice; I'm picking up a Glock 34 on Monday (after 10 long days!) I'm planning to use if for IDPA - I assume it's still SSP, and not ESP as long as I don't modify anything? Should be a nice improvement over my Baretta 92

Agreed. I shot just messing around with my XD45 as a "single stack", was NOT fun.

I think SS is kind of fun, and you are competing against other SS guys. There is a certain fun to reloading too. But you need to be fat enough to ring yourself with 8 round (or better, 10 rounds with 8 loaded) magazines. Luckily, I fit that profile!

BUT back on topic, OP, let us know how that setup works!

Give us a range report on that tricked out G35 as well, I'm interested to know how that special trigger works versus your stock (??) G17 trigger.
