Cool 6.8 SPC or .458 SoCom Conversion

I have several AR rifles chambered in 5.56 and was thinking about converting one to 6.8 SPC.

Anyone have thoughts on the 6.8 round?

I'm undecided on whether to just get a complete upper or rebarreling a current upper and a new BCG. Opinions?

I'm just starting to research, but thought I'd learn from others experiences.

I thought about .458 Socom since I have lots of 30 round AR mags, but the ammo is a little expensive. Opinions?

This build isn't for hunting or any special purpose. Just want to do something different. Plus, you never know about zombies.

Thanks!

Stating the obvious ... .458 SOCOM is more different than 6.8 SPC.

The first time you squeeze off a 458 Socom round, thats when you will know how different it is.

Being a huge 45-70 fan, getting a 458 Socom upper was a must for me...and it didnt disappoint in the least.

I would steer clear of both the 6.8 and the 458 if you plan on shooting either of them a lot , and you are not a reloader...but if you are a reloader you have to choose if you want more long range energy or shorter range major thump.

The last 2 guys that shot my 458 , bought big bore AR's...one another 458 and the other a 50 Beowulf. They are worth the price of admission.

I'm in the same boat, the kid in me wants the .50 beowulf, for the obvious reasons. But the logical person in me says to get the 300blk, for $ reasons.

Just step up to a AR10ish and enjoy. Cost just a little more than a 6.8 these days.

I see a lot of stuff on 300 BLK but it looks like it is 7.62x35, making it a smaller round than 7.62x39, and I already have several rifles in that cartridge.

An AR10 would require a different receiver, rather than using one of my existing receivers.

Does 6.8 require anything different than a barrel, BCG, and new mags? All the ARs I've built we're 5.56.

300blk uses the same bullets as .308win which means it could actually be A LOT bigger than 7.62x39.

^^^ That's about it. I shoot my 6.8 from a 18" Noveske upper. My groups are <0.5" at 100yds. It still has some <thump>, but nothing like a .308. i reload with a 90gr Sierra, but I get the same results with S&B 110gr PTS.
