I haven't heard anything back on PMs. Also, what is the process for building? Does it need to be built as an SSE then converted. Or just finish the frame assemble and be happy like a rifle?

We are still waiting on BATFE for approval of the sample paperweight. Until then, the count is somewhat secondary in significance.
But we'll try to get it updated soon.
Yes, pretty much any handgun you build yourself needs to go through the SSE dance.

So who's going to have the barrel and mag lock parts? I'm sure I can fabricate the sled and mag lock, but a barrel will be difficult.

I'm new to the 80% hand gun (obviously), who even inspects the SSE part of the firearm? Do I need to fill in the voluntary registration form? I have found no new post on this. Only threads 8 years old that say it can't be done.

I am down for 1 steel frame with a rail. I guess I'll put a P226 or a P228 together.

Never mind 1 Aluminum frame, railed.

I'm pretty sure all the springs with the exception of the recoil springs and extractor springs are interchangeable.

Trigger, decocking lever, pins are all shared.

We can talk to him about that but I'm guessing he hasn't made any "combo" jigs yet as it would be hard to justify the effort until he knows the 80% Sig frame is BATFE-approved.
Rick has stated that he doesn't want to proceed with any of the spin-up on the Sig frame project until he gets approval. He did say that he would retro-fit existing 1911 jigs with the Sig stuff after the fact for shipping and a small fee, but I know that's not what you're hoping for.
I'll bring this up when I check in with him next re: BATFE approval.

Very interested, but would there be a build party of some sort because I have no idea how I would complete this thing. I didn't even know people used to build them regularly until I saw this thread.

I am possibly able to purchase one. I'm really interested, just don't know if I'll have the money at the time. I also would have very little knowledge, virtually no knowledge, on how to get it all together, but if there will be a build party and all, I would love to learn.

Still waiting (and buying SIG parts ). It'll take time to hear from BATFE.

KTO used to make them up until 2004, I believe, and if enough interest is expressed, I'll contact him to see, if he'll be willing to make another run of them, and what the price would be. The parts are still out there (although I scooped up as much as I found ).

I'm going to try and make one in .40, as well, if I get another frame (I have one of the old ones). Here's what the old ones look like (these aren't mine, just the images off the Internet):

I've no idea what the price might be, but we'll see what the interest is like first. I paid $270 for mine, but this was a rare 80% frame long since out-of-production. I would imagine, we might get the price down to around $250.

So, if you're interested, post the number of frames you would like, if this works out.

Updated to reflect that:

1. This is a go - the KTO guy will do a run of these frames, if there's a commitment of at least 100 frames. The price will be $250 per ALUMINUM frame. The info on steel frames will be added, as it's received. See post #22 for more details.

2. Per KTO, you can build SIG P228, P229, or P226 on his frames. P228s are obvious, I've read about people building P229s on these (and am planning to do it myself, too). I've never heard of anyone building a P226 on these frames. Hopefully, people more familiar with SIGs will chime in on the differences between these.

3. The lead time will be in months, as KTO needs to get ATF's approval for the design. He already has a frame to submit to them though.

4. Feel free to cross-post this on other forums.

5. I will ask MadRiverArms, if he wants to run this group by, if we get enough commitments. He ran the KTO 1911 frames group buy very well.
I'd like one with a rail as well. Might you be able to point me in the direction of how to start off and anyone in the Central Valley (Fresno) that can help with the 20% work it'll need?

Don't have the $ at the moment, and I don't want to commit now and not have it later either. Does anyone know if he will offer the frames on his site after this group buy if I can scrounge up the cash later

ETA: if anyone is interested here's a 229 slide, spring and barrel..

Sorry, was offline all day yesterday. Had hoped to post this earlier.

BATFE HAS APPROVED KTO's "80%" Sig P-228 TYPE PISTOL FRAME AS A NON-FIREARM!!!

I'm on travel next week so won't be online much, but this is a big milestone. Rick is still figuring out final price. Minimum order will be 100.
More as I know it.
