Default 9mm Production Competition Loads??

I just purchased a Glock 17 to start competing at a production level in IDPA or IPSC. I'm a newb to the games, but I currently reload for my 45, and I would like to develop a load that I can practice with the ideal power factor.

I currently use Titegroup and Berry's bullets for the 45. Ideally I would like to use the same combo for the 9mm.

I've read that most shooters use 124 or 147 grain bullets over the 115's because the felt recoil is less when meeting a certain power factor. How true is this or does production require a specific weight?

I think I have the formulas down to calculate PF so what do you guys run?

I run the 124s for IDPA, but 9mm is still cheap enough that I haven't started reloading it. Found a place called The Bullet Works that sells 1M 124gr reloads guaranteed to just make PF for like $125. When I did the math on primers, bullets, powder, time, etc., for me it just didn't make sense to load it. This place also has great prices on bulk bullets if you decide to reload. I've shot 115s, 124s and 147s and always seem to do my best with the 124s.

Thanks for the reference to The bullet works. It looks like it's $0.22 per round of 9mm, if I reload my math comes out to $0.13 per round including brass. But at least this place is cheap! I may buy some rounds from them first to see how the gun likes them.

For production IPSC I think you just have to be over the minimum power factor for production. If you try a heavier bullet and that works better for you in terms of recoil, it just has to meet the minimum power factor.

I just shoot freedom munitions reloads (115gn) for about 16.5-18.5 cents a round. I don't have reloading equipment, so I don't have a chance to tune the load at all.

I shoot a 124gr Montana Gold JHP over 4.0g of Titegroup. This is for IDPA SSP and USPSA Production.

This load makes about 135pf out of my G34. YMMV.

125 TC Bear Creek over 4.0 grains of TiteGroup at 1.145 OAL. Makes about 133 floor

Power floor is bullet weigth time muzzle velocity. In IDPA you can use the longest barrel gun in division to make the floor,ie, if your G26 does not make floor, you can ask to have it run in a G34

I've been running 147 grain, and it does seem to have a more muted recoil feel. As was said above, Production makes no specifications on weight, only power factor, so if you can make power factor you can run any weight you want.

A lot of the team Glock 9mm shooters also shoot 147 gn, but I've heard of a couple highly ranked USPSA types who prefer 115, so I guess it's YMMV.
Maybe shoot a few hundred from some factory before committing?

That's what I was thinking. I will try a few and see what happens. I just wanted to get an idea on where to start my load development.

As it turns out, I may be getting a Glock 34 since the 17 are on backorder with my FFL.

I don't think you will be let down by the 34. Better trigger out of the box too.

I hope so. I had my mind set on a 17 and spend the difference on a better trigger, but I came across a used one that will work for a decent price.

It's going to be comp only since I shoot my my 45's better.

I use 4.4 grains of titegroup with a 115 gr Montana Gold FMJ bullet and CCI 500 or Fed 100 small pistol primers. I get a 135 power factor through my CZ SP-01. The recoil feels fast and snappy without any muzzle rise due to the full length dust cover of the SP-01.

135PF? You need to get that down to about 129PF. Big difference.

I just DROS'd a 34 today. I may just call bullet works to see if I can get a few hundred rounds of different weights, then order a K.
