Default C&R Help

I've been trying to understand the whole C&R thing. Can or will anyone here help me out by directing me in the right way. Is there a link or website that I can look at to get a basic - intermediate understanding of the C&R?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

Do what Plink posted. Those are the instructions I followed and it worked like a charm.

Try this link.

call the ATF, have her mail you a package application, fill it out, send one copy to local LEO and send the rest with $$$ to ATF, about 4 weeks later some books will come, another week later TWO copies (looks like junk mail so watch out) of your FFL will come.
Buy an FFL log book from brownells.

mail signed FFL out to every place that sells C&R

AIM, SOG, CDNN, Centerfire, Century, J&G, Midway, Brownells, Sarco, etc........

It can get a bit convoluted, but the simple thing in CA is this.
You can buy just about any longgun over 50 years old over the internet or phone/catalog and have it shipped to your house. NO FFL fees, NO DOJ knowing you bought another gun (for a little while at least).
NO paying 470 to transfer a $49 rifle.
Plus you get discounts at a lot of gun related vendors.

If you search or ask again, you can get all the convoluted answers.

Follow the info above to apply.

The 50 years thing is very important -
Under cali law, a rifle must be 50 years or older in order to be exempt from a FFl transfer. However some rifles are C&R under federal law but are not 50 years old yet.
Example: The indian 2a1 is technically a C&R rifle under the ATF (it is on the list) but were made in the 1960s - ie not older than 50 years old, so in california they MUST be transfered via a FFL.

You can also buy C & R pistols out of state and bring them back. When you do, you must register them with the DOJ (costs $19.00).

in addition to what people have said above, it DOES count as "proof of residency" when buying a handgun at a dealer. Very useful when you don't have ANYTHING in your name (no utility bills, no car registration, etc)
