Actually it's only "illegal" to import military and ex-military type firearms along with ammo from China.

Many copies of old western type shotguns are currently being imported from China.

Wonder if these will be of better quality than a Russian or another cheap knock off?

You are incorrect. It is illegal to import rifles from China, unless you are talking about black powder/antique.

Sporting shotguns are exempt from the ban.

Better quality? I highly doubt it! This is China we're talking about!

I am considering one as well. I wonder if these are the Chinese T53's that ended up in N. Vietnam.

Has anyone seen one up close? Quality?

There are a few Type 53's near you in Morro Bay that you can inspect at Harbor Gun Shop Inc. The hours he operates are a little odd, 12-4pm (Mon-Fri).

Century list them a "good", "fair" and "with cracked stocks" for condition. "Good" is actually not very good. They will be mismatched numbers too. I'm sure they will be shootable. However they will not look like the rifle below.

For a T53, that is amazing shape. Most DO NOT look like that.

Thanks Robidouxs; I should have known you'd know their whereabouts. Maybe I can give the m44 I bought from you last year a Chinese baby brother.

Then my guess would be Albania. Might be pretty interesting stuff, even if it's in rough condition. Thanks for the info.

Quite true. However they are out there. Pic's of another. It still has the original anti-rust pack under the rear sight.

Never been to that shop but, on "YELP" there are only two stars for the rating and the owner apparently has a not so good attitude.

May I see some photos of the fresh imports from CAI / SOG?

Good T53 is listed at $160 on CAI's site with coming soon. Direct import from China is banned. These T53 most likely were served in another country other than China. Do you have any clue of their last stop? Reps from CAI said their T53 were imported from Eastern Europe. During Mao’s years, China did give small arms to Albania.

I own a T53 and I can say that the machinery and steel is just as good as a Russian M44. The stocks, however, were made of a much softer wood so you can expect pretty beat wood.

I have pictures of my T53 in the gallery section.

Personally, I would gladly pay up to about $175 for a decent one. Although I only paid $125 for mine.

I was lucky enough to pick up a T53 from a calgunner for peanuts. Its not in the prettiest shape but it certainly is a joy owning a Non-russian/european Mosin Nagant. Haven't gotten around to shooting it yet though.

Ordered 2 from SOG. They arrived yesterday. No pics yet. One was handpick, other wasn't. Will try to get to that at some point.

Handpick was most certainly worth it.

Both rifles were missing the cleaning rod and came with no accessories.

Non handpick: Stock is VERY rough. I am tempted to sand and re-stain. Looks like a dog chewed several parts of it. Metal is very nice though, rifling is strong. Trigger is rough. Lots of cosmoline.

Handpick: Finnish is worn in places but the wood is very clean. little nicks here and there but nothing major. Trigger is long but soft and very smooth. I was shocked. Rifling is worn some but still very strong. Metal is super clean. Probably won't mess with this one. Just clean the cosmoline at add it to the collection.

Just got mine from SOG Arsenal 296 date code 1953.12 wood is a little rough and has white haze. Any way to clean the haze folks? Bore is not bad, no cleaning rod, and blueing is good. Cannot wait to shoot . Pics this weekend. Yes I pd for hand select, I also ask for 1953, if possible. Yeah!

Have a star on stock but nothing else, all numbers match even the bolt, I am curious what is the 52 on the bolt and butt plate next to the serial number. It appears the importer gave it a new serial number. Have you guys been listing both in you book?

Thanks

hmmm now that I got my C&R I am on the fence on getting and M44 or T56. I mean they are identical like Russian and Sin-Soviet SKS right? I looks like the 10$ hand pick was worth it for C&R Trader.
