Default Next Project Rem 700 clone

Well, I'm excited to begin a new project that will no doubt mean I'll spend more than the finished project will ever be worth. Note: I refuse to justify the economics of building my own firearms... I like it because I 1. am really that paranoid and 2. I like to make just about anything I can....

Anyway, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of an EDM'd action blank. Can't wait, even if it sits on the bench for a year.... I will have to machine this puppy either just by published dimensions, or hopefully I will find an accurate CAD file of a 700 action so I can give it a go.... If I get anywhere with this I'll reserve this thread for updates.

Who could be this excited about a hunk of metal.....

Making your own firearms is almost never justified by the cost. You can almost always buy them cheaper than you can make them. But that is seldom the point... I'm going to be watching this one just to see how it all turns out. Good luck!

Since home gunsmith requires a paid membership I'll try and paste in this info, they aren't cheap but the EDM work would be the hardest part of this build.

Quote:

Long Action Blanks - 9.25" X 1.5"
Short Action Blanks - 8.25" X 1.5"

These blanks are for home bolt action builders with a mill and lathe. They are Wire EDM cut from 1.5" USA Made Carpenter 17-4PH Stainless Steel Condition H1025 which is approx 38RC hardness.
The outside is turned true to the bore and will yield a 1.450 diameter action.

They are cut with a .700 - .701 bore and will work nicely with a Remington Bolt or a .6995" PTG bolt for a benchrest quality fit.

Long Action $250.00
Short Action $210.00

Shipping $10.00 each

i saw those a couple weeks ago, have fun with that one. Id rather spend another $150 and get a bare 700 action new from brownells. But then again I dont have a mill or a lathe

Am I correct to believe that only the interior profile and external diameter have been cut?

Looks like it. I've always wanted to build a bolt action, I'm just not set up to broach the inside, and couldn't justify it. This is a great start. Like OP said it's not about saving money at all.

Actually I'd rather the outside profile not be done, just a block edm'd out would be fun as well. You could shape it to your liking and not have a remy 700 clone, but something truly custom based off the 700 action.

Yep that's all that is complete, probably makes it pretty safe to sell.

there is a guy who makes some interesting reamers and taps for finishing these things off... I'm thinking of investing in this since if it goes well I might finish off a few of these...

OK, thought I'd try and stay disciplined and post that I recieved the blank. My calipers at home are not that accurate, but the blank seems to be machined to spec, if a bit smaller on the OD but that is OK as I believe stock REM 700 actions measure in at 1.35. I will probably either leave the extra bulk for strength and custom fit the stock, or machine down the OD on the lathe. Finish clearly shows machine marks, but like I said, the OD will likely come down a bit. There was one woopsy on the end of the blank, but I'll just need to designate that end to be the breach end, and it will eventually be machined away.

The bolt Raceway is the impressive bit.....very nice and uniform. will be picking up a PTG bolt Assembly next to make sure it is a good fit before I sink any more money into the project. Probably should have ordered this already.

Pics!

And the bottom is about the best blueprint info I can find.....

This is about the best CAD available right now.....

http://grabcad.com/library/remington...r-short-action

might want to download it while it is still available... no telling when a manufacturer might get protective.

WOW! Thanks for that link. The only problem with all of the receivers on that site is that I am going to go broke trying to make them all.

That looks nice, I'll have to play with it in Solid Works a little to see how well it's done.

Thanks from me too!

I'd like to offer my skills/ sevices to trade with someone who can show me the ropes of a custom build. I've tinkered with stuff here & there but really want to put a bolt gun together.

What I have to offer:

A full service machine shop with capabilities pretty much unlimited (30 machines)
from Wire EDM, plunge EDM, CNC mills, CNC lathes, welders, manual mills/ lathes, inspection equipment, etc. Not looking to exchange any cash, just partner up & trade with someone KNOWLEGABLE who doesn't have the resources I do. Last guy wanted to use my shop to learn machining.

I am a Mechanical Engineer by trade, class A machinist, EDM specialist, & Certified Solidworks Professional. I have this to offer, you should have the gunsmith expertise.

Are there ANY examples of ANYONE getting ANY type of 80% firearms from a Rockethub scam I mean project.

As a newbie with ONE post don't expect much support.
