The rifle range is in the No. Cow Mtn. area, and is not subject to the closure that the So. area will be under.

Fire season will be starting soon and I'm not sure what my schedule will be like but if it happens within the next 2 weekends I'm in. other wise I'll have to wait till I find out what my work schedule is going to be. I'm hoping it'll be such that i can help out with this.

Hello all. I have had great success in getting waste haulers (Waste Management, Consolidated and others) to participate in community clean up's. They donate the trash bags, hand pickers, 25yd or 40rd cubic bins and so on. It is great PR for them and most of them have it within thier advertising budgets to do this. If someone wants to shoot me a PM the next time a clean up will take place, I can look into the public relations folks with the firms in that area. All my success has been in the LA area, so be advised..

Hello All,

My apologies for going MIA.

I haven't logged in with an update since February. At that time I had been trying to get in touch with the BLM rep (Jeff Tunnel) and was not getting any feedback at that time. My sense was that they were not interested in arranging for a dumpster until the rains were done for the season. My last communication was not answered. In that email, I indicated that there was a group ready to donate time toward a clean up if they would just suggest a date or range of dates. I didn't hear anything back. I will try again this next week and hopefully it will be something useful to the BLM and they will respond.

I've been told that they already have a program wherein they bring in inmates to clean up during the summer. Maybe that's all the effort they want to put into it each year. Mr. Tunnel did suggest that it would be great if we would rebuild the benches, or build a wall (?) at the base of the slope to keep people from driving up. I really didn't quite understand the wall request, but, it's what they indicated they wanted. I asked for details, but again, did not hear anything back.

Regarding rebuilding the benches, it seems that getting and installing new wood tops would be a big plus, or, somehow installing concrete tops. Anyone want to get together to plan that upgrade? If so, PM me and we can try to get a group together to do that work. Ideally the BLM would provide wood, and we could provide the labor to remove the old wood tops and put in new ones. I have a 12" chop saw and tools for demo and installation, but we would need a generator to run the saw. I'll ask about wood from the BLM in the email I send to Mr. Tunnel on Monday.

Anyhow, again, my apologies for unplugging. I was not so encouraged by the lack of response from BLM. I imagine they have other priorities, and are probably understaffed. I'll give it one more try. I'll reach out day after tomorrow, by phone and email, and will report back before the end of the week.

best,

JD

I live in Ukiah, have a pickup truck and three adult kids (can't really call them "kids" anymore) that are eager to help.

I also have a small tractor with a bucket on the front and a box grader on the back. No trailer to haul it but I would be willing to rent one if it could help.

I'll PM Donnovin with this same info and see if there is a good time for this. I would be willing to go solo (with the kids) but would like an official shutdown announced so we don't have to deal with any public disgruntlement.

Also, I think it would be a good idea to have some sort of serious signage that calls for everyone that uses the range to clean up after themselves, no dumping, etc.

These could be at the range itself and at the beginning of the road into north Cow.

PERFECT. How about ten signs (I'd rather have a few extras). I will cover all costs + your gas money (+ a sixer of your favorite brew).

E-mail me at bergmen-at-pacific-dot-net (@.) with your snail addy and I will gladly send you a check.

This is great, thank you so much for doing this, I (we) really appreciate it!

Default Cow Mountain

Hi all, I will be up at Cow Mountain this coming Monday with some friends to shoot and relax for a few hours. We will bring along some garbage cans, bags, rakes to square up the area as much as we can. Should be a beautiful day.

Thank you sir, your are a scholar and a gentleman.

I plan to recon north Cow as soon as I can. Chart mileage from the entry road sign to shooting areas needing cleaning and getting photographs of same. Hopefully this Sunday (6-24). I'll be out of town tomorrow (Saturday) on the motorcycle.

Those signs are pure awesome!

Eat Dirt,

Would it be a good idea to have a sticky indicating you are the contact for the signs so we don't lose that in the threads? Might make it easier for others to get them.

The top of the hill before the range has been cleaned. All the big stuff has been hauled out of the rifle range itself. Doesn't look too bad.

Default Photo Recon of Cow Mountain Shooting Areas-6-25-2012

I went up to North Cow yesterday to inspect each of the many shooting areas and photograph the debris at each to get a handle on the scope of the problem(s). Most of the trash and debris that I encountered would be very easy to rake up and place into garbage bags (brass, shotgun shells, soda pop bottles, cardboard boxes, paper targets, chunks of wood, etc.). This amounted to at least 80% of what I saw (with a few exceptions).

I have many photographs with descriptions of locations so this will take a few posts to report.

I followed the map (maps available at Ukiah BLM Office) and drove the entire available roads (except the road down to the Mayacmas Campground) up to the end at the CDF Water Tank.

Here is the first series:

For the first 3/4 mile or so it is a pretty steep climb into the area. Road is in decent shape with a few ruts and depressions here and there. Pretty easy to navigate and 4WD is not required. I have an LSD and all-terrain tires on my truck and it was eezee peezee.

The first shooting area is on the left, 1.8 miles from the entry:

Swinging to the left a bit:

Default Photo Recon Post #2 (continued)

Second shooting area is 2.2 miles up on the right. This is just opposite a locked gate leading to a popular trail head for hikers and mountain bikers:

Not much debris here, this is the cleanest I've ever seen this area it is usually pretty trashed out.

At 2.5 miles there is a "T" in the road, to the left is Willow Creek and the designated Rifle Range. I went left.

The next fork in the road, Willow Creek to the left, Rifle Range to the right. I went left again:

I had never been down this road before. People have used this as a shooting area also. The road is short and dead-ends in about 1/4 mile. About half way, I encounter the first shooting area on the right:

Pretty clean with a few targets and shotgun shells on the road.

Default Photo Recon Post #3 (continued)

With the end of the road in sight at Willow Creek, there is another shooting area:

Light debris, targets, shotgun shells and brass.

Next up is the Rifle Range. When I arrived there were 2-3 trucks with shooters at the benches. I didn't want anyone to feel self concious about me with a camera so I avoided taking pictures of the people and benches. Although it is a mess, this is the cleanest I've seen this place (although I haven't been here in a year or so). Still plenty of trash and debris but most can be placed in garbage bags. No T.V.'s, refrigerators, computers or junk that would take a tractor to pick up (as I've seen before).

Default Photo Recon Post #4 (continued)

After leaving the Rifle Range, I headed up the road taking the right fork at the "T" (left goes to range).

The next shooting area encountered is at Mendo Rock Overlook which is about 5.5 miles in. There is a large turnout on the right which is a popular place for shotgunners since there is a large slope for throwing clay pigeons.

Mendo Rock as seen from the turnout:

This area has also been cleaned since I've been here. Still lots of shells and light debris but not as trashy as before.

After this is the turnoff to the Mayacmas Campground:

Default Photo Recon Post #5 (continued)

I continue straight ahead towards the end of the road. Just after the campground turnoff there is a large turnout on the right that is used as a shooting area:

Pretty clean, really. Not too much debris here.

Next up, end of road at the CDF Water Tank:

Somewhat trashy, lots of inconsiderate vandalism and signs shot up. The real mess is down the canyon to the right where there are pallets, wood and other sizeable chunks of debris. I don't know how people are getting down there (no road) so they must be carrying to down the paths:

Default Photo Recon Post #6 (conclusion)

So there are about seven shooting areas I covered plus the Rifle Range. All need some level of cleanup. Many of the shooting areas are small and can be cleaned up with a small crew and a day with a rake and shovel + several garbage bags. The Rifle Range could use a crew, notification to the BLM office and plenty of tools and garbage bags.

I'm not sure if the best way to do a cleanup is to schedule an organized task with several volunteers on a given day or to encourage small groups to have at it on their own. I'm inclined to suggest the latter.

I think what I am going to try is to go prepared to do a clean-up session every time I go to do some shooting. I always bring my adult children with me so we can whip out a cleanup in short order. My kids dive right into tasks like this and they would be glad to help.

I'm only a few miles away, have a pickup truck and would be glad to participate in any designated cleanup effort. I'm not in a position to organize or lead such an effort but would gladly volunteer.

I have five CalGuns cleanup signs heading my way thanks to "Eat Dirt" that I will be posting after one of my cleanup sessions. I can make these available to anyone else who does the same.

My plan would be for me (and my crew) to start at the first shooting area (1.8 miles in), clean it up and post a sign. That would set the stage so to speak. I would inform BLM of my intentions so they are in the loop and are aware of the effort and signage.

So that's it. Any thoughts?

Dan

I was actually there at the Rifle Range when you pulled up to Photograph it.

It's the first time I've been up there since getting out, so it's been about 6 years since my last time being up there, but it was MUCH cleaner this time.

Quite funny you showed up to photograph though because I was telling my Dad on the way up there that CalGuns.net was trying to put together a clean up, then I overheard you talking to the Couple at the first bench about CalGuns.

Anyway my Dad said if a event is scheduled to do a big clean up he can attend (as long as work permits) , and I would willing attend as well.

Cool! As I stepped out of the truck I felt pretty self conscious since for all anyone would know I could have been from Handgun Control photographing evil gun owners. Sorry I missed introducing myself and talking to you.

I tried to keep it low key (I wish I had worn my NRA shirt at least) and specifically avoided creating any discomfort. I wasn't thinking ahead because it would have been a good opportunity to discuss what I was there for.

Poor guy I was talking to had a brand new M1A with the safety locked with a cheap padlock but forgot the key at home. He was hoping I had a saw, heavy cutters, anything that would bust the lock but I had nothing.

I'll report when I head up for shooting/cleaning in the next few weeks I presume.

Seems like its mostly shotgun shooters causing the mess.

LAME!! Fooking people baffle me as shotgun shells are SOOOOO HARD TO PICK UP (rolls eyes)

Hey, just got the signs in the mail today. MANY THANKS!

These look great, I plan to use them when I start my cleanup routine. I told my kids, they are all for it.

I'll report with pics after the first "session".
