Default Springfield M1A SOCOM 16: Looking for an inexpensive red dot

Hey guys, my dad has a Springfield M1A SOCOM16 that has the integral scout picitinny rail.

He's had it for a long time and talked about wanting to get an optic for it, but doesn't want to spend a whole lot on it since he only shoots it from time to time.

I was thinking about getting him one as a gift, but I don't really want to spend more than say $75 for various reasons mainly that if I bought him something expensive he wouldn't accept it and would get mad at me for "wasting" my money.

Anyway, I've been using this cheap Barska 1x25mm red dot on my mini and it seems to be working ok, but i don't know if it would survive the beatings of .308.

What do you guys recommend under or around $75 that will hold zero and hold up to the .308 beating it will receive?

I don't know if they make anything low-profile enough to allow cowitness with the factory irons, but something lower profile would probably be better.

This is a stock photo of the rifle he has:

he has the specter gear 2-point tactical sling on it as well.

edit: without an optic though, this was just a quick google images search

This. $75 optic on a $1500 rifle makes no sense to me. Find a used Aimpoint and use it for years.

Another vote for Primary Arms!

I have the M4 clone and it is perfect for my intended use.

He can always upgrade later, but as a (very nice, BTW!) plinker/range toy, not for work or battle, I think he will keep the PA. Very good value, extremely good customer service and speeeedy shipping from the PA gang. Talk to Jason about the various mounts and cowitness.

Guys, seriously did you read the thread? He's asking for something around $75 not $400-$500! For shooting every once in a while there's no need for something that expensive unless he's all about accuracy. Personally, I think a Primary Arms or Vortex will do just fine and will be within budget.

I don't foresee a long happy life for inexpensive optics on that mount.

It gets HOT!!!

Have you ever seen a plastic BUIS mounted on a gas block? Not pretty.

I went with the PRO, but it was still four hundred bucks.

You will have to get a pretty thick cheek-piece as well.

A beauty like that deserves a aimpoint m4 or a t1.

OK here's the deal you or your dad are not going to find anything new that's an optic that's under 200.00 that's worth the effort. I had a cheap dot on my SOCOM 16 when I had it and the dang thing blinked off when I shot it. Tell your Pops to grow up a little and realized optics aint cheap.....Even the ok ones cost bout AT LEAST a $100.00 for them that can handle a 308 round.

Id look in the for sale section. Lots of good optics in there for half the cost of a new one. those 75.00 aren't going to stand up to the recoil and they are just going to become a headache since they wont function properly.

yeah, i showed him the trijicon and eotechs at a LGS once, and he saw the price tags on them and basically said he'd rather buy me a whole new rifle....the irons worked well enough on his M14 in vietnam.

The thing is, he bought a standard M1A before and loved it, but gave it to my older brother. Then he missed the damned thing and instead of buying the exact same thing, he decided to get the socom 16.

I think he just feels weird about it having that picitinny rail up front and nothing to put on it.

does the standard M1A handguard fit over the Socom 16?

Maybe i can take off the picitinny rail and just put a flush handguard on it for him instead so he doesn't have to look at the rail...

I have a Scout Squad and removed the scout rail and replaced it with a full length handguard. Brownells has a black Fulton Armory handguard for $20 that would do nicely.

I'd say don't worry about it and use the irons. I had a SOCOM 2 and put a Micro T1 on it and eventually decided that it was trying to make an M1A into something that it's really not: a CQB weapon. Putting a cheap reflex sight on it would go even further in that direction. These type of sights seem to really limit using the gun's long range potential to me. I ended up deciding that I wanted at least standard length Op rods and not to be tied to the stock brake that the 16" action needs to function, so I sold it and got a Scout Squad. I still haven't decided on an optic for it, but it won't be another Aimpoint. I'm thinking about the Leupold Scout scope with a Mil Dot reticle from their custom shop. I'm not suggesting that route for your Dad, but I'd vote against a $100.00 optic on that rifle.

Bushnell trs25 is on sale at midway right now. I have two and love them so far. Tons a great reviews other than mine. And they are very light weight compared to many other red dots.

I'd also vote for PA.
I've got one on my .308 and haven't had a single issue thus far.

Also I like to add those irons on that SOCOM are pretty good so your Pops may just need that.

For CQB the rail kinda speeds things up a bit, reminds me of the top rail on a shotgun.

Primary arms is blowing out blemished M4 clones for only $59.99. Hard to beat for the price.

Not only will it cook an optic it's a safety hazad. Most people have have no idea how hot that rail gets till they get a second degree burn. It looks cool but mounting a rail directly to the barrel of a high power semi auto rifle is a bad idea.

i blame springfield and their socom 16.

I have been using a Primary Arms on my .308 FAL Carbine for a few years now with no problems. It holds point of aim and never failed me.
