Default Ruger 10/22 as an early X-Mas gift

I have quite the funny story for you all.

So I was watching TV this morning and I get a phone call on my cell. I answer it and its a gun store telling me that my Ruger 10/22 came in. First off I was stunned. I had no idea what was going on and I told here I never ordered this rifle. She confirmed my name and number and all the info she told me was correct. Now I was getting worried about who got my info and used it. So I told her again that I never ordered a gun from them and that I have never heard of their gun store. By then she asked me if I wanted to dismiss it and I said yes and we hung up.

Told my dad in the next room that I got a strange call from this gun shop and acted all like "ohhhh what was the shop name and what rifle uuhhhhh" told him Field Time Sports & Guns in Westminster and Ruger 10/22 and he was like "MERRY CHRISTMAS" since he knew.

Turns out he was told that the rifle was not going to be in for a couple weeks due to a back order, but the shop got a surprise shipment in.

Anyways with that story done, I am super stoked! I guess he knew what to get me since I told him a month or two ago that sometimes I wish I had a .22 to shoot instead of the expensive .45's that my 1911 uses so he thought of that as a gift. I couldn't be happier.

Nice story; and I know you'll love your 10/22. Who doesn't? We can argue what is a better .22lr rifle but the 10/22 is such a pleasure to shoot and customize. Congrats.

Thanks. I am really looking forward to it. Do you know of any cool scopes? I'm gonna keep it stock for a bit but eventually I will want to get one and test the true potential out of it and see how far I can push it.

The guy at the shop told me about the Tri-Mag adapter which I will definitely be getting. Also what ammo tends to work best? I hear CCI Mini Mags which I have shot in range 22's with no issues.

Sweet. I love it when a plan comes together.

Skip the tri thingy. It's goofy and designed for 18 year olds.

Mini Mags will work well, but they are on the expensive end of the bulk rimfire spectrum. The days of eight dollar bricks are long gone, but shop hard and often. http://gun-deals.com/ammo.php?caliber=.22+LR

Buy it cheap and stack it deep. I once broke a cart at Kmart because they wouldn't roll the pallet out the back door to my Bronco.

Itís actually kind of beautiful that in America a large group of people known for owning guns are only feared because they vote.

Wow that must be a lot of ammo.

So how many rounds can I put through a 10/22 in one range trip before I should clean it?

Also what type of bullet should be preferred for hundreds of rounds? Copper Plated, Lead Plated....?

My 10/22 will eat anything, even the stuff guys on here constantly complain about. She hasn't even seen mini mags, except in the safe for my P22!! I have probably(low ball) 4000+ rounds through mine and I just recently broke it all the way down to completely clean it(way past due, but the barrel gets cleaned after every outing and the inside of the action, but not a full detail) and it was functioning flawlessly still.

It's a 10/22 run whatever is cheapest through it, lead/copper really hasn't been a big issue, the lead stuff I have found to be a little dirty(because its is normally the cheapest of the cheap stuff). Also because its a 10/22 you can replace just about anything on it if you were to wear it out, but that takes alot of shooting to do.

I have a Bushnell scope on mine(the GF really likes having a scope, and its slowly becoming "her" rifle on outings) and I can hit a 4" x 4" square offhand at 100 yards without really trying to hard, so it is plenty capable.

Congrats on your gift and Merry Christmas

Congrats! I'm planning to get a 10/22 myself. Turners has it on sale for $229 for the stainless model. Do you know how much he scored it for? Thanks.

Congratulations ChopperX! I recently got myself a stainless steel carbine with synthetic stock for Christmas. I'm still on my ten days of torture (Bail Date 12/31/11) so I know how you feel. Been taking the time in between the wait to do a little research on scopes. I don't know if you are setting yourself a budget for the scope but check the following thread out. I got a lot of useful insight from our fellow Calgunners to what scope to get.

I will be making that tough decision soon and will update as soon as it is made. Congrats again. Happy shooting and Merry Christmas!
