kestrel weather meters and balistic calculators
After talking with another calgunner tonight I got to thinking I might want to pick up a kestrel weather meter but I am not sure what one
can anyone recommend one for me I am looking at the 2500 and the 3000 right now but I am not sure what features I will need Also I am thinking about picking up a PDA and putting a balistic calculator softwear on it but I know nothing about PDAs or balistic calculator softwear if anyone could also recommend a PDA and softwear that would be appreciated too Thanks |

Do you have an iphone? If so you can download a ballistic app directly to your phone. I use ballistic fte as my primary ballistic calculator. If your into long distance shooting in the field and want first round hits a kestrel is a very handy tool. I have a 4000 that I use in conjuction with ballistic fte. Makes first round hits easy.

They make a Kestrel that can also do ballistic calculations.
http://www.kestrelmeters.com/product...g-ballistics-1 It's nice to have it all in one package but its pricy. I instead opted to download KAC Bullet Flight on my iPhone, and bought a simple Kestrel wind meter that measures wind and temp. |

If you're willing to spend a bit more, you might want to get the 4000 or 4500.
The guys at CAPRC recommend those because the 4000 series directly measures Density Altitude, a key factor in determining bullet trajectory. You could get the 2000 or 3000, and calculate Density Altitude for yourself using Altitude, Temperature, Barometric Pressure, etc. (I forget the formula) but that's still a separate calculation you would need to do. Also, the consensus is that the versions with integrated Horus ballistic software are not worth getting because the calculations are based on G1 drag models, with no way of using G5 or G7 models. That's kind of a let down to find out they can't use G7. |

The further out you go, the more useful the weather station and PDA get. On top of that, most apps now include a handy milling function that makes ranging really fast and your basic math skills suffer

As for weather staions, all you care about is density altitude. Temp you can get from a $5 thermometer. So, get the kestell 4000 at a minimum. Or Brunton makes a $125 "Pro" model that will do DA as well.

I've got the 4500nv with Bluetooth. You can get shooter for the Android, and now iPhone. The shooter program for the Android atleast has a free add on for Bluetooth so shooter can gather the info from the kestrel.

the original ballistic calc pda's were palm devices. they have simple ballistic calculators out there too. if you have a smartphone, i don't see why you wouldn't want to just grab an app for it and be done with it. if you don't want a smartphone, either get an ipod touch and use the apple apps or get the kestrel 4500
