Default Five year life of new primers (possible rumor)

Not trying to start any rumors but I just got a call from an old friend and former Navy squadronmate who heard from an acquaintance who is writing a gun book (makes him an expert, right?;-) that new manufacture primers are now DESIGNED to have only a five year life. This sounds like total BS to me. There have been some changes in primers (thus the oversize flash holes, etc.) and perhaps the new formulations don't have the same shelf life as the old ones (I have some CCI LR from the 60s that still work fine) but planned 5-year obsolescence?? I seriously doubt it. Still, I promised I would ask on here if any one else had heard this. So...

More from the internet.

This or similar rumors have been running around for a couple of years now.
If primers had a shelf-life, then the manufacturers would be obligated to print an expiration date on them.

For what it's worth, rumors like these are best addressed by asking one or more manufacturers or the NSSF before passing them along.

You are correct. It is total BS. It is a rumor that has been going around since the early 1990's. Although the proposed shelf life varies from 6 months to 5 years depending on who is spreading the rumor that week.
