Default Handgun under 250?

Hey guys, Im looking for a cheap handgun for my wife to have, The reason behind cheap is because if she decides she doesn't like shooting I'm not out much. Please don't say "save another 200 and get a glock" because there is no need for one as of now. I don't really think a hi-point will workout. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm.... I might be selling a few guns in or lower than that price range. I am looking for trades right now, but if that doesn't work out I will most likely sell them.

Is there any requirements for your wifes gun.

Caliber?
Semi or Revolver?

^^^ this. Except it's a lot more expensive to rent where I am. $15 per handgun plus you buy ammo from them.

Also, what exactly are you looking for? A range toy for her? Something she would like for HD? What caliber? Something more compact? All of these should be her decision and not yours.

Based on what you've said so far and the fact that she probably hasn't shot a lot, I would suggest a Ruger Mark 22/45 (pretty easy to shoot) or a Walther P22 (pretty fun to shoot, similar to a semi-auto, but it's also harder to be accurate with. Good, I guess, so you can work on fundamentals).

Bersa Thunder .380.

Or maybe some other South American gun like a Taurus. People seem to love the Bersas, though. Lots of bang for the buck; $300 or so new, less on sale or used.

I'm going to agree with the rental idea. Let her pick what she wants to shoot, rent 4 or 5 of them, and let her choose. 60 bucks now and 5-600 later getting her what she likes is going to be worth way more than 250 now and her being turned off on shooting for the rest of your life.

I just bought my gf a Sigma 9mm to use at the range. Best 300 bucks I spent as far as an insurance policy to keep her distracted from wanting to shoot my berettas and kimber warrior.

I tend a agree that she needs to try out a few different options. You might even be able to find out through renting at the range whether shooting is something she will like or not.

Another option is to buy something that you would be happy with keeping for yourself even if she doesn't like shooting.

One other thing to think about. Suppose you find a handgun in the price range you're looking at, and she does take to shooting, and decides that her standards out grow this el cheapo pistol? Then you'll be minus the $250 or so you spent on that, and whatever you're going to have to spend buying her something better.

How about a revolver? Check out the Armscore line.
I love my hipoint c9 shoots just as well as my sig226 and glock19.

I'll just echo what others have said here and suggest you get her to a range and let her handle and shoot as many pistols as she likes. When she's made her decision, purchase that gun for her.

Even if she chooses a Sig or 1911, better that you spent money on buying her a quality gun she will shoot and feel comfortable with than wasting $250+ on a gun that neither you or she will like or shoot.

If you're going the rental route, Target Masters in Milpitas has a special going on for revolvers and .380, $4 for a .380 and I believe $2 for revolvers. You have to buy their ammo though, their prices won't be wally world level but they're not bad.

Yeah, rent. Target Masters in Milpitas isn't far from you and they have a huge rental selection. Start with a .22 to teach her the controls and safety stuff and then step up to a 9mm or something else IF she wants to / is ready to.

Otherwise, I'd say buy a used .22 of some sort. Maybe a 9 mm but I would really not do that unless she has already shot a .22 and has expressed interest in further shooting.

...and take her to Coyote Valley Sporting Clays and see how she likes that. Love that place ...

You only have two options new:

Hi-Point C9
Heritage Rough Rider .22/.22M

I would have picked the latter personally, and since the Hi-Point is out...

If the first car she owned was a used Yugo, I don't imagine she'd like driving much. There's a point there if you can see it.

Don't make the mistake of buying "just enough to prove it won't work". Many of the choices mentioned here are good ones, but slightly more than your stated budget. You may need to understand that 250 is an arbitrary number, and adjust priorities accordingly. Don't make price the only factor any more than you would anything else in life.

Range toy for around $200 is the Heritage Rough Rider in .22LR/.22mag. This is a Single Action Revolver.
Home defense would be Bersa Thunder in .380 for around $270. $300 to $320.00 will get you a Ruger P-Series in 9mm.
I sold my Ruger P85. I still own the Heritage and the Bersa. All 3 are worth the $. 9mm ammo is cheaper than .380 acp. The ammo savings alone would justify the extra $ for the Ruger.
All the prices I have quoted do not include sales tax or DROS fees and are for new guns.
Good luck.

My wife is dead on with her HiPoint .380. It has cycled over 700 rds and only one misfire(bad ammo) and you can not beat the guarantee.

Just because so many people want to dis this weapon, doesn't mean it doesn't perform. The owner has the right idea, firearm protection should be affordable to all that are legal to buy.

I'd just go ahead & get something that she likes and that you can live with if she doesn't take to shooting.

That's kinda how it worked out with "our" 22/45. I got it for her and she didn't much care for it. Tried out a SIG Mosquito and she loves it.

Upside: We both have .22s we like.

Downside: She decided she really likes SIGs & I had to get her a 9mm.

At under $250 you're really limiting yourself. Even used you're not going to find a whole lot that's any kind of quality. Even Ruger P series are usually $300 & up.

Does your wife want .22lr?? easy to shoot and not much recoil, the ruger 22/45 can be had under your budget.

Oh and definitely go rent some pistols first, say targetmaster and see if she likes it, do that a few times and let her decide if she wants one or not.

Default my $00.02 worth

if she is a non shooter i recommend a wheelgun to start. i know its not as sexy as a semi-auto, but the learning curve isnt as steep (limp wristed jams, slide bite), and depending on her hand/arm strength, she may not feel she can properly rack the slide on an autoloader. my wife is in this category....

I would say rent, or look at a Bersa .380, or a TT-33 both can be found for 250 or so.

Also ruger 22/45s can be found in that range, and they are great anyway.

Lastly if your near a turners they have RIA GI 1911s for $400, if your wife does not like it you get a serviceable beater 1911 out of the deal.

Spend some coin, buy her a super nice 1911.

If she likes it, she keeps it.

If she doesn't like it, a new 1911 for the win!

Quick question, do you not own any firearm(s)? If so, why not let her use yours for the mean time until she decides she wants one of her own. Either way, rentals seem the safe bet with what limited resources you have at your disposal at this time…

I think you can find a decent Co2 BB Handgun for under $250 lol I joke I joke. Nah but seriously. Start out with a .22 and work your way up. It seems a lot of the times if you start them on the .45 they'll get scared or not want to shoot because of the recoil. A .38 Revolver can be a decent gun, depending on the maker of course. You can PROBABLY find a .38 Special for under $250 if you search hard enough.

Turners Ad just came in. Smith and Wesson Sigma 40 S&W or 9mm for $299. Thats not bad. A lil over your budget but still affordable.
