Default Samsung 47" LCD for a steal.....or is it?

So my best friend needs to move ASAP and he is trying to offload all of his stuff, one thing that caught my eye was his 47" Samsung LCD. He bought it like a year ago from someone because it didn't work. He tried replacing the power supply, which didn't resolve the issue, he thinks the inverter board may need some replacing but now he cant fix it because he needs the money. He offered to sell me it for $200 and I am pretty tempted, looking around I found a used inverter board from the UK for 35. I will get specifics on the model number tomorrow.
Does anyone have any experience with these? My dad is an electrical engineer so he would be helping me repair it.

i can tell you that power supplies going out due to cheap/bad capacitors in samsung LCD's is very common, if he replaced the power supply already and that did not fix it i would stay away from it unless he went cheaper esp without knowing more of what it does when you try to turn it on right now.

also inverter boards are not easy to replace in most LCD TV's unlike laptop and most PC monitors rather than having just 1 or 2 CCFL bulbs and usually only one inverter LCD TV's have a ton of CCFL bulbs and a long inverter board with multiple inverters to run them, the inverters are very high voltage and a simple inspection of the board should show signs of failure like burn marks around the transformers etc. if i had to guess i would say he probably hooked something up to the PSU wrong or got a bad/wrong PSU for the model TV. seems more likely to be the problem esp if the TV is flat out not turning on still.

The bad thing about TV's is that you'll eventually turn it on and all the programming will come through.

Dude.

Time for a reality check here.

It's a broken TV, and the guy wants to sell it to you for $200. And then you want to put more money into fixing it.

Think about this for a moment, and then just save up for a couple more weeks and go to Overstock.com and buy something big for 400-500 bucks.

+1 hold off (i install flat screens and when they break I take them to a shop to have them looked at, 95% that I take to get checked are not worth fixing.)
