Default Black powder cannon legal?

Did a search and here and didnt find anything. Are homemade black powder cannons in .177cal legal in california? There is no primer or firing pin. Iginited with a small cannon fuse and black powder. I wanna make one at work just for fun but didnt want to run into any problems. Iknow zip guns are illegal but I dont think this falls under that definition.

Any help, links would be appreciated.

I'd nose around a legal website and read CA Penal Code 12020 for starters and see what you read. I want to say no, but if it shoots something I think someone somewhere might have a problem with it.

Black powder, non-fixed ammunition. It's not even legally a firearm.

Somebody was shooting one at the Metcalf range in San Jose about a month ago. Its a County range, so if it was illegal they definately would not have been firing it. It was pretty cool to watch.

Hey nick If you make one for me I'll compensate you for time and materials. I promised my girlfriend a while back I'd get her a cannon.

I bought a .177 cannon a few years ago. It only uses a fuse to expell the round and it's fun to play with.

If Toes gets one, I want one too!

They are legal, oherwise we would have problems at Civil War reenactments with full size cannons and mortars.

Awesome thanks for the feedback guys. I'll play around with the idea of making a few. I'll let you know if I decide to start selling them.

I'll take a picture of mine when I'm done.

We won't be using .177 caliber cannons at Moorpark. I don't think te OP is ready to take on building a 3" gun yet.

So my quarter bore swivel gun is legal here? Well that is good news. I was worried after reading here that a guy got busted for a carbide cannon.
Now I just need to find a place to shoot it.

if you could figure out how to hook that little cannon up with a piezo electric switch that could be tripped from a "spoon",you'd have one heck of a sewer rat killer.
If you bored it out to 3/8" you could pack in a few more b-b's and seal them with a little ball of wax.

Goodbye Mr. Sewer Rat.

I don't know a thing about carbide cannons but, they might be illegal whereas, muzzleloading BP artillary is not.

Can one legally shoot any cannon in their backyard?

That depends on the yard. If it is legal to discharge a firearm in your backyard then, you probably can discharge a cannon. If you live somewhere where discharge of an airgun, bow, firearm, slingshot, etc. is not legal (this includes most towns and cities in the USA), then, no it's not legal to discharge any size BP cannon.

Nick, BTW, there is no law against using a primer, firing pin, hammer, etc. to aid in discharging a muzzleloading cannon in Ca. In fact, we use friction primers at Civil War re-enactments and NEVER use fuse of any kind. Fuse is not really period correct, less predictable and therfore less safe than other meathods.

So this thread got me all fired up, so I poked around on the net and also found the same link: http://www.pocketcannons.com/
Not bad, and not a bad price either. I've got a good friend that owns a machine shop, the two of us were tossing around the idea of trying our hands at machining out lowers. I think I may toss this his way and see if he wants to give this a whirl first.

How about these keychain cannons: http://www.blackpowder-cannons.com/

I don't know anything about this site or the quality of their work but, I'm thinking of placing an order. I just need to trim my wishlist down to three figures before I place the order. Of course, a keychain or two will be on the list and possibly a COEHORN SLED MORTAR but, do I really want the HOTCHKISS REVOLVING CANNON???? How about those cheroots? Are they even legal here? Finally, do I really want a HANDGONNES too? While most of this stuff doesn't seem to be 100% period correct, it sure looks fun to play with.

I have spent hours googling and can not find the .177 cannon I bought a few years back. It is brass with a plasitc carriage, fires a red plastic projectile, uses only fuse and is spring loaded. The vaccum created by the burning fuse somehow propels the projo. Can anyone find a site selling these? The place I got it from was in Florida and that's all I remember.

Carbide cannon? Like the cast-iron Big Bang cannon I have had since I was a kid?

Or are you talking about something larger?

No I read it here so it must be true. A guy was shooting his carbide cannon and was busted for discharging a firearm. I never heard how it played out. I have a 1/12 scale Brookes cannon that I used to shoot to celebrate holidays. But one Independence Day I attracted the attention of a helicopter and a couple of cruisers. I have stopped celebrating to save the municipal funds.

Alright I'm bringing my thread back.

I have renewed my interest in making small .177 cal cannons (I think the .30 cal is alittle over kill). They will be made out of brass and an aluminum base. I will update this thread when I have my prototype made and begin taking orders. Cannons will be $25 shipped but you must supply your own fuse/powder/ammo.

Want to make a bowling ball mortar for me. I have the stuff. I have ammo for it also. Now I have 16 bowling balls. If not what about a beer can(soda in my case) mortar.

Also need a photo of the ones you have.

Doug, if you have the oxygen cylinder, my neighbor will weld it up for you. We were just discussing building a BP muzzle stuffer cannon, out of a WWII 40mm AA barrel that's had about two feet of the chamber end cut off. I think the shipping on top of the $800 price tag might put a damper on it though. Being rifled, I'd have to make a 40mm mini ball mold too.

I have the cylinder but it is still full of O2. I need a plug for the valve replacement then drill it for the fuse and a cross pin to lock it in place. Then build a mount for the bore that I can break down for transport.

Then I really want to built a beer can mortar. They are fun with beer/soda cans filled with concrete.

Dangit, now I want a cannon too. Let's see some pics of your prototype please! I'll prolly be in for one. Now I'm wondering where they got all those cannons they used to shoot off in Boy Scouts.

Gosh, I hope it's legal, I have three, here's a thread where I built a carriage for the largest, a .50.

I have projectiles for it, but so far all I have fired is wadding, a damp paper towel seems to keep secondary burns from taking the hillside.
