Default Xm193

I have been using this in my Ar15 with a 1-9 twist with pretty good results. Is there anything better? Where is the best place to buy this ammo from? I have been buying it at Turners for $6.99 a box of 20.

Is this the XM193 from Federal? in the plain brown box?

Good stuff; plain military ball. If you mean by 'better' more accurate, just try a variety of different loads and see what your rifle likes best. But for pretty much 99.9% of all your shooting I'm gonna guess that the M193 will cover all your needs.

edit: forgot to say that that's probably the going rate retail; you might check out the Ammo forum over at AR15.com; they have a regular update on prices and availability of various brands and types of .223. Check it out.

Yeah, it is the federal xm193. It is in a brown box but says federal on it.

Good stuff. I have about 3K kept for SHTF. Ammoman.com just got a new batch in, $329/1K (yikes!). Sure miss the time when it was $150/1k... should've stock more. Sportsmans Guide also has the "loose packed" XM193 in for $299.97 + shipping/1K, but those are 3rd grade ammo and you do have to sort out the real defective rounds.

As far as anything more accurate, probably won't be at that price. Federal Gold Medal Match 69gr, Black Hills 68gr all will shoot very accurately with 1:9 barrel, but you do have to pay a lot more money for it. $6.99 for 20rd is not bad by today's standard for 20rd box XM193.

It's so easy to duplicate M193 on the cheap.

Get WC844 from Pat's Reloading, your basic small rifle primers, bullets from Golden West, and range brass and you can load for around 15 cents per round (give or take a cent or two).

15 cents compared to 35 cents per round. Huge difference.

Umm...what are you going to need 3k rounds of ammo for SHTF?

Zombie attack?

...hunting rabbits?

$6.99 per 20 is a bit high for non-steel core ammo IMO. I've bought cases of XM193 on sale for $4.99 per box of 20 last year.

Get this stuff if you're going to spend a few bucks: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AMM223-46090-66.html

Federal American Eagle 55gr. FMJ is very similiar(almost identical) to XM193 in specs and ballistics. Check out this link: http://www.miragetechnologies.net/FA...vs%20XM193.htm

I usually shoot Remington UMC(green and white box) 55 gr. FMJ at from Wal-Mart for $5.34 per 20.

I stay away from running Wolf in my AR, too inconsistent.

If you need to ask... I just like to have as much ammo as possible. I can use the ammo for above two scenario, or whatever I see fit

Stanze,

I have been sour about the American Eagle for a while. I used some 45acp in my XD and I got covered in dust. That turned me off to the whole American Eagle line. My arms looked like I was at the beach playing in sand.

Because AR has floating firing pin... it's better to get the CCI military primer instead of regular small rifle primer, just to add additional safety measure to prevent slam-fire.

As for ballistic, XM193 shooting out of an AR usually have higher velocity. The spec sheet are not 100% accurate, as measurement standard is different (XM193 velocity and muzzle energy was measured 78 feets from the muzzle, while AE223 uses a 24" barrel and did not specify how far away they measure it... not apple to apple comparison). Talking about wound ballistic, one of the unintended feature of 55gr FMJ is the capability to fragment; and this will only be true if velocity is fast enough (2700fps and above). Faster bullet will get you longer range before bullet speed drop below the threshold. In this department, M855 type with steel core actually perform poor compare to XM193. Granted, M855 will also fragment, but the initial bullet speed is already lower then M193 type, which reduced it's effectiveness, not to mention most range won't let you shoot any round with steel in it.

3000 rnds? In some ways, I wish I only had 3k! The last time I moved, I had two full size pickup loads of ammo & components. Then again, with prices the way they are, I guess I got lucky.

I just picked up a case of this: http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/223.html

XM193 is pretty pricey if you can find it, though the guat wasn't that much cheaper. I prefer Q3131a and have a couple cases stashed away. I've mostly been using Winchester white box value packs from Walmart that I bought all last summer, though the supply is running low. Right now the guat seems to be the best deal.

I want the days if cheap ammo back.

God forbid you want surplus .308 right now.

LOL, I picked up 2 cases of SA .308 surplus before AIM ran out; since I don't shoot my M1A as often, I should be good for a while.

Guat M193 surplus is good and hot, huge fireball coming out when you shoot it. For some unknown reason, when I shoot it out of a Mini-14, all bullets hit the target sideways... works okay in my AR though.

For plinking, I use Wolf. For training, I use Georgia Arms Canned Heat. Canned Heat right now is sold for $220/K + shipping; but if you can find a few guys to do a group buy, total order over $1K will get you free shipping. I have shot 4-5K of the canned heat now. Very reliable, load to M193 spec and havn't had any issues yet.

Canned heat is my friend too. I'll take just about anything I can get for around .20/round these days. Anybody want to sell me some of their XM193 they've stocked up on for cheap!?(joking but serious)

I'm glad I still have 6,000 rounds of this stashed from when it used to be 180 bucks shipped from wholesale hunter. Man those were the days. Now I have been shooting up my IMG I bought when it was first introduced by AIM. I also shot up a bunch when Turners used to have it for 2.99 a box on sale. Man I should have really stocked up then.

I too love these rounds, but want to start reloading something very similar to them. I have all the equipment, brass (both new win .223 and once fired xm193 brass), bullets (55gr fmj), primers (cci #41), and powder (H335).
What powder load would get me there to match the velocity and ballistics of xm193?
Hodgon powder range is stated to 23-25.3 gr.
The barrel is a 1/9 16"

And dang, prices went up.

Lol indeed. Best explanation for XM193 I've heard was at a carbine course I attended a few weeks ago. XM193 = stuff made for foreign military sales. QC on that stuff...not so great. So you get a higher percentage of non-spec ammo. It also runs a little on the high-pressure side. Can't find the numbers offhand, but I remember that the chamber pressures were running around 62k, and that's near the high end of the 5.56mm chamber spec.

In either case, it might be cheap, but I'd rather run Wolf ammo. Extractors are cheaper to replace.
