Default Vepr 7.62x 54r

I just drosed my 7.62 x 54r vepr from Atlantic Firearms. This rifle is a work of art. It is surprising light, much lighter than my PSL. Atlantic firearms was a great dealer and took care of this calgunner!! Can't wait to shoot it!!

Lighter, really? I wouldn't have expected that considering the heavier barrel and receiver. I love my PSL but accuracy goes down significantly once the barrel heats up. I was drooling over these once I heard they came in 54R. We're going to need lots of pics and reports from the range.

The only problem are their proprietary magazines which can not be purchased anywhere, so you only get two of them. Otherwise I like it, I just wish someone would make a true Russian dragonov.

The stock and Pistol Grip are easy, ACE LTD makes a receiver block for the Vepr which will allow you to attach any of the ACE stocks or AR stocks with an additional mount. The hard part I think is the fore grip.

I thought Atlantic Firearms did not offer the VEPR in Cali legal format? How did you get them to do it?

Question

Is it tough to thread the barrel, without removing the front sight assembly first?
The VEPR conversion on Atlantic's site does not have a threaded barrel. So I assume this is not an easy task.

I'm extremely jealous.

The receiver on the Vepr looks like the one on the Saiga .308 except heavier. I'm wondering if it would be possible to use the SVD handguards with the SVD handguard adapter from here: http://thedsmlab.com/s308_to_SVD_project.html

The SVD handguards are available here: http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/tigr-and-svd-forend.html

Can it handled heavy ball or is it the same as the PSL with only light ball ammo? Love my PSL but would love to shoot the heavier ball ammo without damaging the trunnions.

The lack of range reports is likely due to the high cost factor associated with these rifles and the fact they have onyl recently hit the market. I am gonna go out on a limb here and guess that most of these will end up like the waffen works psl carbine variants in that 99% of them will be safe queens.

I like the SKS rifles and of course the AK47 rifles, and would love something in a 7.62 x 54. But for that kind of money I would like to see something that could give me some additional reach at the range. Something more accurate and farther shooting than a AK perhaps?

Your not paying for long range and accuracy. Your paying for the reliability and cool factor! hoping now that prices are going back down and once Ron Paul gets elected we will be able to pick them up around 400-500.

Default Well I went to burro canyon but

A group of friends and myself went to burro canyon, I was hesitant because last time these guys were screaming about no trash, no metal no plastic, no no no and I made a decision never to return, that being said I have a brand new vepr 54r that needs a braking in. We rent a private range and arrive about 11:30, inside the check in office the guy asks what are ya shooting?? Ar, Vepr, 22, shotgun, and some handguns, "There will be no rifle shooting, that a pistol only range"!!...,, WTF, what happened to our private range, The guy says all the rifle ranges are full. All right I will just go to the regular rifle line to test this baby. We drive over to the private range set up targets that include 2 2x6 attached to saw horse legs, on top of the 2x6 are mannequins. 6 6inch circle metal animal targets, 4 rented pvc paper targets, 3 bowling pins and 6 empty coke cans stacked up. We start shooting for about 20mins, The little green golf cart rolls buy, nothing is said, the little green cart comes back, " I"M KICKING YOU GUYS OUT OF HERE, YOU ARE SHOOTING METAL"??? WTF, WTF,, " YOU NEED TO TALK TO THE GUY IN THE CHECKIN OFFICE". NO ONE EVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT METAL, and we ARE NOT TRYIN TO SHOOT THE LEGS OF SAW HORSE, ITS THOSE SIX EMPTY COKE CANS YOU GUY ARE VIOLATING!!"" Again WTF I new I should never go to burro canyon, I packed up and the Vepr never saw the light of day I will try next week at Angeles forest, another crappy range were you have to live with the range guys coming up and bothering you every minute..

It "is" fire season, you need to be a little sensitive about shooting metal targets. I dont shoot at Burro and dont know anything about the range, but I know not to set up metal targets in fire season.
Just put up paper and everything is just fine.
I think the other issue may, I repeat, May, be that some of your targets may create a mess when they get all shot up, and lots of folks wont clean up after themselves.
Just my opinion, sorry you didnt get to shoot the gun, I am very interested in how it does.

looks great, is it possible to buy just the barrel and would the barrel fit into the PSL? The Vepr looks pretty solid but at 1200 it's a hefty price.
