For that many orders, a price break of only $14* doesn't seem to be much. I must be missing something, what is it?

*Price compared to Midways daily price on what seems to be the same upper

Just a question: I'm assuming a .223 not 5.56 chamber?

I could only find one DPMS fluted 24" varmint upper on Midway's website. And that was in .204 Ruger and it was $800 somthing. Do you have the link? Ahhh- I see you edited. This is fluted... the others are not...

Ahh, I knew I had to be missing something. I didn't catch the fluted part. Midway has the same non-fluted one for $525 +$13 shipping. So this is a much better deal than what I first figured.

If the barrel says .223 I'm sure it's a .223 size chamber. My two DPMS rifles say 5.56.

Yeah, you would think, but the barrel says 1:9 and the post says 1:8; the barrel says .223 but the post doesn't specify caliber.. so I'm still asking. I would want to know before I buy... wouldn't others? .223 means only .223. 5.56 can handle both. It could be .204 for all we know. But I'd rather know for sure than assume.

For those that want more info on why scootergmc is concerned...

Quote:
5.56 mm NATO versus .223 Remington

While the 5.56 mm and .223 cartridges are very similar, they are not identical. Military cases are made from thicker brass than commercial cases, which reduces the powder capacity (an important consideration for handloaders), and the NATO specification allows a higher chamber pressure. The 5.56 mm chambering, known as a NATO or mil-spec chambers, have a longer leade, which is the distance between the mouth of the cartridge and the point at which the rifling engages the bullet. The .223 chambering, known as SAAMI chamber, is allowed to have a shorter leade, and is only required to be proof tested to the lower SAAMI chamber pressure. To address these issues, various proprietary chambers exist, such as the Wylde chamber (Rock River Arms)[1] or the Armalite chamber, which are designed to handle both 5.56 mm and .223 equally well.

Using commercial .223 cartridges in a 5.56-chambered rifle should work reliably, but generally will not be as accurate as when fired from a .223-chambered gun due to the excessive lead.[2] Using 5.56 mil-spec cartridges (such as the M855) in a .223-chambered rifle can lead to excessive wear and stress on the rifle and even be unsafe, and the SAAMI recommends against the practice.[3] Some commercial rifles marked as ".223 Remington" are in fact suited for 5.56 mm, such as many commercial AR-15 variants and the Ruger Mini-14, but the manufacturer should always be consulted to verify that this is acceptable before attempting it, and signs of excessive pressure (such as flattening or gas staining of the primers) should be looked for in the initial testing with 5.56 mm ammunition.[4]
Then here is what Armalight says:
http://www.armalite.com/library/techNotes/tnote45.htm
Quote:
FACTS:

.223 Remington (SAAMI standard) and 5.56mm (NATO standard) rifle chambers are almost identical. The difference is largely limited to the “freebore,” the cylindrical space in front of the case mouth, and the “lead” or “leade,” the the tapered region that eases the bullet into full engagement with the rifling. NATO and SAAMI cartridges can normally be used interchangeably with no problem.
The SAAMI chamber features less freebore and a tighter leade, which normally provide better bullet fit and match-grade accuracy than the NATO chamber. It is wonderfully suited to match bullets.

Millions of rounds of NATO ammunition have been fired safely in Eagle Arms' and ArmaLite’s SAAMI chambers over the past 15 years. Occasionally a non-standard round (of generally imported) ammunition will fit too tightly in the leade, and resistance to early bullet movement can cause elevated chamber pressures. These pressures are revealed by overly flattened or powder stains that reveal gasses leaking around the primer.

Now here is what DPMS says about their chambers:

Quote:
What chambers are used in DPMS barrels?
The standard military contoured barrels are chambered in 5.56 NATO, the DPMS Bull Barrels are chambered in .223 Rem.

I've always loved Armalite's take on the whole 5.56 vs. .223. Something I would rather not chance.

Thanks for the info on the DPMS barrels. That helps. Edit: FWIW, this looks like a good deal!!

Well, it seems we have hit a stall on the 24" Varmint Uppers. If we are unable to get 20 people, the supplier will not be able to get us this pricing. I will close out the group buy on Saturday, if we don't hit 20 the pricing no longer applies. If you are still interested, I can negotiate for 19 or less. Get the word out to other Forums please.
Thanks.

What the price would be if we could buy 12 uppers? Or 10, assuming a couple of folks would bail out?

The Supplier is going to honor the price, we are only at 19 though. The supplier also mentioned he would offer other upper options so we could hit the 20. If you want a different upper to go along with the 24" Varmint, let me know and I'll get some pricing. This isn't to replace existing 24" uppers, just so we can get people that don't want a Varmint Upper to join our group and hit 20.
Thanks to those that have been hanging in since November. I only have 5 people that have sent PM's, I will put a + by your name so you know I have your order already.
