Default SJR 10 - De Leon oblivious to Project Gun Runner, calls for rifle sales reporting

Not to be out done by the rest of the nations anti-gun legislators ignoring the BATFE scandal(s); Kevin De Leon is using an SJR to call for rifle sales reporting, the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban and a crack down on gun dealers.
Citing recent events in Mexico.

Is this a guaranteed pass in California?

Highlights. Wow, this is a doosy.... I have a feeling that Obama is gonna want to steer the conversation away from some of the "numbers" in this one... Not to mention any pol worth his salt is gonna see something like this as a election year time bomb. California can get away with this because their seats are secure.

"This measure would urge the President and the Congress of the
United States to pursue a comprehensive approach to stem..."

"WHEREAS, Project Gunrunner was initiated by the ATF, with the
objective of tracing firearms recovered from crimes in Mexico, and
although the tactics utilized by this program are currently under
scrutiny,
by the end of the 2009 fiscal year, the ATF referred 497
cases to the United States Department of Justice to pursue the
prosecution of firearms trafficking violations to Mexico;"

"WHEREAS, In May 2010, the Mexican government stated that of the
75,000 illegal firearms it seized in the last three years, about 80
percent--60,000 firearms--came from the United States; and
WHEREAS, Estimates of guns flowing into Mexico from the United
States are as high as 2,000 guns every day, a staggering statistic
given that Mexico has only approximately 6,000 legally registered
guns; and
WHEREAS, The United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms
and Explosives (ATF), as of May 2010, has processed 69,808 firearm
trace requests from Mexico and it appears that a majority of these
firearms have a nexus to the United States; and
WHEREAS, There are more than 6,600 licensed United States gun
dealers operating along the United States-Mexico border and according
to several ATF officials, individuals or groups engage in straw
purchasing on a regular basis as part of a scheme to traffic United
States firearms into Mexico; and
WHEREAS, The ATF reports that 87 percent of firearms seized by
Mexican authorities and traced over the last five years originated in
the United States, that approximately 68 percent of these illegal
firearms were manufactured in the United States, and approximately 19
percent were manufactured in other countries and then imported into
the United States before being trafficked into Mexico; and"

It should say this instead;

WHEREAS, The United States is now experiencing an era in which the
number of illegal border crossings have decreased increased over the last
decade yet and drug-related violence and the BATFE-enabled trafficking of United States
firearms into Mexico has skyrocketed; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate and the Assembly of the State of
California, jointly, That the Legislature urges the President and the
Congress of the United States to pursue a comprehensive approach to
stem the trafficking of illicit United States firearms into Mexico,
that includes the redirection abolishment of United States Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the mandate for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and the US Border Patrol to perform the duties they are sworn to uphold by effectively securing our border with Mexico, using any means at their disposal, without any treasonous interference from the State Department, The Department of Justice or the President of The United States of America.

Deleon is, at the least, a narcissistic, egotistical person who believes he will somehow, skyrocket to fame, fortune and power if he can get this kind of legislation thru the sick, convoluted, dysfunctional, stone age, California legislature...

Assuming SJR means Senate Joint Resolution it carries about as much weight
with federal legislators as my complaints about taxes and the government financial raids on the social security trust fund.

But as you all have pointed out it does confirm what we have always believed about DeLeon. He is a self-aggrandizing narcissist.

WHEREAS, Following the expiration of the federal Assault Weapon
Ban in 2004, it has become easier to purchase high-powered assault
weapons and the United States Department of Justice, Office of the
Inspector General has reported that 48 percent of crime guns
recovered and traced in Mexico in 2009 were long guns, up from 20
percent in 2004 and recent data also shows a surge in seizures of
assault rifles and .50 caliber guns. According to the ATF, the drug
cartels tend to favor military-style assault weapons such as AK-47s,
AR-15s, and FN 5.7mm caliber pistols, known in Mexico as "cop killers"
because they can pierce body armor;
He pretty much copied this from wikipedia.org, then screwed it with his own personal opinions ("cop killer" 5.7x28 pierces level II-A body armor, most police wear level II and lower, so it wouldn't protect from anything other than 9mm and similar rounds anyway ).

Last edited by Chosen_1; 07-24-2011 at 5:40 PM.. Reason: lower level body armor than I thought

there should be serious consequences and penalty of prosecution for including inaccurate information and outright falsehoods as justification for proposed legislation.

My own resolution to send to Congress:

WHEREAS, Senator De Leon is a douche, any and all correspondence from said douche should be ignored.

Liberal Arts Degree does not always equal liberal. I earned one at the same time as earning two Criminal Justice degrees. Just means that in most cases one has taken all the required classes one needs to graduate. Just because I happen to love music and took music appreciation as my humanities class means nothing. Just means I wanted to take at least one class for fun that was not related to my CJ degrees. Now mind you I also found criminal and evidence law classes fun.

But again.....never acknowledged that most of those guns manfactured in the US were sold legally to the corrupt MX Gov't/Military by our gov't, and then "stolen" from the MX Gov't by corrupt MX personnel and given to the cartels.

So perhaps what really needs to be put in place is a ban on the US Gov't selling weapons to MX.
