Shooting4life, how do we measure the overall length of 7.5"? Diagonal tip to butt? Parallel to the barrel to the rear of the butt? So can the length be over or under the 7.5"? I'm not sure I quite understand that from your original post.
Thanks

here's the law for you to read for yourself,

12133. (a) The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to a single-action revolver that has at least a 5-cartridge capacity with a barrel length of not less than three inches, and meets any of the following specifications:
(1) Was originally manufactured prior to 1900 and is a curio or relic, as defined in Section 478.11 of Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
(2) Has an overall length measured parallel to the barrel of at least 7 1/2 inches when the handle, frame or receiver, and barrel are assembled.
(3) Has an overall length measured parallel to the barrel of at least 7 1/2 inches when the handle, frame or receiver, and barrel are assembled and that is currently approved for importation into the United States pursuant to the provisions of paragraph (3) of subsection (d) of Section 925 of Title 18 of the United States Code.

I want to thank everyone for their input and help in getting a Harrington & Richardson 9 shot double action western style revolver into California for my wife. The single action only surgery went well and the revolver is now home and restored to double action.

If any of you need an amazing FFL look no further than Zircon John's in Ukiah http://igundealer.com/. He is a CalGuns.net member and contributor, was willing to receive the double action revolver and let me perform the conversion there before starting the DROS. He has super low prices on new firearms and charges hardly nothing to use his FFL to receive used and out of state firearms. Excellent dealer and now friend.

If any one needs help converting a Harrington & Richardson please pm me.

Here is my 1934 9 shot top break double action (scary accurate) H&R Sportsman next to my brides 7.5" H&R 9 shot model 976.

No FFL's like Zircon John in Southern California.
He's one in a million.

All he did was contact the DOJ and tell them what I read here. They confirmed to him that he can receive an off roster handgun, have the purchaser convert it to roster compliant, begin the DROS and then the purchaser can convert it back to it's original state post DROS as long as the original state does not conflict with handguns legal to own in California.

I can't believe other FFLs are not taking the time to do this.

And CADOJ told them that they are supposed to do single-action conversions for people?

Thank you for this great post. As a novice to revolvers, I'm still a little nervous about trying to do this for the first time at an FFL. I was wondering if anyone knows of a video that shows how to do it? Surprisingly, I couldn't find anything on You-Tube.

Also, anyone have experience with an FFL in the Sacramento area who'll allow this? Thanks for any info.

I've been led to believe, by people that know about Colt actions, that they do not easily lend themselves to being DA neutered like Smiths do.

Just to give you guys a heads up. I just did a conversion on a s&w that had mim parts. You don't need a punch to remove the double action sear, it just pops out when you push on it. But please pay attention because the spring is exceptionally small. I lost mine while doingthe conversion at the shop because I wasn't paying enough attention. Just got my replacement spring installed from brownells.

Default Any FFL in Sacramento who will allow DA to SA conversion?

This thread has given me hope that I can actually get my hands on some of the off-roster S&W's that I long for.

Does anyone know of an FFL in Sacramento who allows the DA to SA conversion? Anyone who would do it for you (for a fee of course)?

"Anyone who would do it for you (for a fee of course)?"

I think that would be changing the nature of the beast. In that scenario it would be an importing business that might get more attention and soon become illegal.

In all likelihood gun laws are made by people who have never been hunting or target shooting. The overall goal would seam to be to keep firearms from entering the state with out taking on the 2nd Amendment. Until the roster of handguns is overturned (not likely) our best bet is to play this cat and mouse game of converting. The DOJ is aware and accepting of it but it isn't news worthy or opening a flood gate of weapons entering the state and there for most likely will not be an issue.

If FFLs began receiving and converting off roster handguns I believe it would cause further restrictions. Just my .02 but I was able to convert the piece I wanted with no prior experience and about $20 in parts and tools. gl!

Valid point, Jalibass, though I understand that there's an FFL in Elk Grove who does the Single-Shot exception conversions for common off-roster semi-autos. I would assume it should not be materially different to do so for revolvers.

I recently completed the SA conversion process in order to legally purchase and DROS a beautiful old Dan Wesson revolver off of Gunbroker. I used Rob Blank's FFL service in Milpitas. The process could not have gone any smoother. Rob is a great guy and his DROS services are incredibly reasonably priced. I highly recommend him. Anyway, thanks to this thread this beauty is now all mine!

Could someone clarify the minimum length of a revolver barrel that can be brought in via SA conversion exception? I'm getting conflicting reports of "more than 3 inches" and "3 inches or longer". Anyone know which it is? I'd love to get my hands on a 3" model 66 or model 19, but am not sure if its legal to import. Thanks.

3 inches exactly measured from the front of the cylinder to the end of the barrel.

Can you post pics or vid of how to remove the double action sear from a S&W hammer?

Non MIM hammer it is just a pin you knock out in either direction, I believe you need a 1/16 puch. On MIM hammers you just slide the double action sear out of the hammer. No tools are required.

Where is the exceptionally small spring located? Is the spring on both MIM and non-MIM hammers?

Both have springs. The MIM hammer has the really small spring. It is behind the double action sear pushing against the hammer. If you push against the sear you'll feel the spring pushing the sear forward.

Hello shooting4life, first thank you for sharing this great information.

Second, do you happen to know what Rob's email address is at RMB Enterprises? I am looking to buy off roster revolver from out of state. Thank you.

I used Rob for my SA exemption transfer. See post #69 above. Couldn't have been easier and his fees were surprisingly inexpensive.

Don't email him, give him a call: (408) 946-5287
