A disgrace. West or East side? Were people still shooting out there? We need to schedule another cleanup.

I've never shot out there, but I'd be up for a cleanup to help keep these spots open for responsible shooters to enjoy.

It's hard for me to believe people haul a bunch of crap out to different areas shoot the crap out of it, and then just leave it.

Since the late 60's of dune buggies and three wheeling, I taught my kids. Whatever you take out, you bring back +.

I have been thanked for that teaching over the years from them all.

The same thing applies here to targets, trash and brass.

I'll volunteer to help with clean up if someone puts it together.

It's supposed to be closed, but people still shoot. I guess it's power company property with no shooting signs, but not very well enforced. I don't shoot there, enforeced or not. It's not my property and there's signs. The place I took a picture of burned a while back and the guys got arrested I think.

It's a horrible disgrace. That's one of many areas. It's going to take a bunch of people, trucks, trailers, and a weekend or two.

Let's start talking about dates.

Anyone know who to talk to about getting rolloff dumpsters?

If it's in the next 3 weekends, I am game. I don't have a vehicle worth trucking much out with, but I can bring a few buckets to collect and recycle old brass. I can volunteer a box of trashbags from costco.

I'm going to be busy this weekend, I'll start working on trying to get rolloffs. Anyone who can or wants to help with logistics, let me know.

I'm game, name the weekends. I have an F150. I'll put as much as I can in the truck bed. The dump will probably charge us a BILLION dollars to dump it though. Just sayin'...

Yeah, I'm thinking we need to get someone to help out with rolloffs. I'll try Allied Waste, we fix their stuff when it breaks.

Damm, I haven't been there in the past 5 years. That area looks like the south end from the tower road?

Last time I was there I had to call 911 for a dirt-biker who broke his arm and bone was piercing out of the skin.

What a shame though. Last time I was there I left with 10 bags (Contractor grade 3.5mil) of trash (Only 1 for personal use).

Next time I'm out I will make sure to get as much as I can from the allowed sites.

Also, the SD Dump charges $35.00 IIRC. When I was doing hardwood flooring in 2010. Might of gone up I don't know.

Here's the fees: http://www.sandiego.gov/environmenta...mar/fees.shtml

Certain areas are closed off. Per BLM some spots are open. Even though they need to make a new map of the site for restrictions from the 'Sunrise Power Link' and 'USBP' area.

Default jacumba/airport mesa

Guys, I hate to burst the bubble on your noble cause here, but this area is still closed to shooting. It will stay closed as long as the bp has their "spy" spot on top of Airport Mesa. You are correct in that the east side of this area is private (SDG&E) landand was once posted No Shooting by them (I dont know if the signs are still up). WOn't be a problem shooting there until someone calls the sheriff.

IF any of you are interested, in the very "near" future I will be writing an informational thread regarding this area and my attempts to garnish info from the BLM. Local BLM refuse to answer my questions. I have an email into the Supervisor in Sacramento. Supposedly the BLM is working on a new "use" plan for this area. IF he responds I will be posting the results. Thread will be called something like BLM, Border b's and SD Shooters. Or maybe something fancier if I get creative. Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

I understand the area is closed, and I see why. I still think it needs cleaned up.

tackdriver - Please Re: this thread when you get info. You guys need a place to get out of the city and I need to get out of the heat.

For the time being, I'll get out there and at least haul off the big stuff and scrap metal and burnables. I have enough truck and trailer for that and I go up that way to escape the heat anyway.

I've called BLM a month ago they said the area was open. I've requested twice they make a new map of the shooting areas. I will call them tomorrow and attempt to get any new info. I haven't been there in the past 5+ years. But that area was great for camping and shooting. Last time I camped out on the North side of the road.

Only had USBP attempt to sneak up on us once from subway [like we didn't see this big *** van following us] and he saw that we had duty belts/packing he changed his tone LOL, He just asked us when we would be leaving and about Ford Rangers (My Truck) LOL. Was near cat's den if you's know where that's at.

Per SDSD I see no restrictions. http://www.sdsheriff.net/documents/shooting_map.pdf

Thanks, iron, good news. If you think someone needs to go to the BLM office, it's on my 2 mile drive to work.

http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/elcen.../shooting.html

Areas closed to target shooting:
Due to high fire danger, wildlife management, safety concerns, and litter problems, several areas managed by the El Centro Field Office are closed to target shooting. These areas include:

Airport Mesa, Jacumba (CFR 8365.1-6)
Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area
McCain Valley
Table Mountain
Jacumba Ouststanding Natural Area (CFR 8365.1-6)

Hell, if your in Imperial CO. Why not shoot at the dunes? IE: Gordon wells(North off the i8 ) [Patrolled by BLM and ICSO]? Need to be a mile [or so] from populated areas.

So if I'm copying that correctly then the WHOLE Jacumba area is closed off as well are the dunes off the i8 in Imperial Co?

I believe those would be considered the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Area.

Not even close. ICSD is Glamis. Way east. No dunes in Jacumba.

EDIT: I didn't read that right, sorry.

Glamis is north of the 8 on 78.

You are correct. But there's lots of other places to shoot down here. In the winter!

Will do single 6. I'll probably write it up in the general discussion area and drop a note here.
As a teaser... the blm field mgr told me after I requested info on what procedures do they follow before they allow border b's to take over an area... "There are plenty of places left to shoot in San Diego" Does that you and idea of what we're going up against??

Yeah, that's what I thought. Thanks for checking ironc. Right now, unless we can gather enough people to create a big enough scene to get it reopened our only hope is that the road leading to the hill top gets washed out. Hopefully, the money used from homeland security to build it initially has run out!
Has anyone else seen the border vehciles parked on the little hill in front of airport mesa (the one that they've used for over 30 years)?. You can generally see three vehicles there. One facing south, one east and one west. You think maybe they've got a lot of time on their hands???

Yeah I've seen a bunch of Jeeps sitting out there. At the camp site we always use there is this area where they sit watching the i8. At night you can hear their radio echoing.

I really wish I could make it to the cleanup. I've got fond memories there. Where I lost my shooting virginity many eons ago and saw my first porno being filmed LOL .

What about the valley of the moon? Whats up with that area?

I'd would never go to buttercup. There are too many bad stories. An old friend of mine said when he was out there, there was a couple who had a fancy RV. A bunch of illegals jumped the fence and attempted to 211 them at gun point. The couple bailed into the RV and locked it. The illegals shot the RV up, and ran back into Mexico.

BLM and USBP shows up 2 hours later.

You mess around the border, you better stay well-armed. If you go shooting, watch your back, don't get too engrossed, keep another firearm on you besides the one you're shooting.

GMG, yeah I got you, I read your post too fast first, sorry.

Looks like Valley of the Moon is closed, looks like the whole shootin' match is. Sorry, that wasn't very funny.

I think we need to be proactive and get up there and do some clean up before we even ask about reopening. Looking up there makes me ashamed to be a shooter, even though the trash isn't from shooters, it's from TRASH.

I think maybe the BLM should look into setting up a designated shooting area. Someplace that has a backstop and is relatively flat, open, and free of plants, etc. That way when it needs cleaned up, it's easy. Bring some sort of small tractor with a rake/claw bucket and go to town.

Re: temps, if I get up and get out at 4am, it's not too bad, but it gets hot quick and stays that way until the next wee hours. Problem is, I only get one day a week (Sat) to do that, and if I need to do anything else outside, poof! In the mountains, it may hit 90s, but at least it's only in the middle part of the day. Morn and evening are nice.

Someone needs to remind them that our taxes pay their salaries, and that they are public servants.

SS you'd asked that I let you know when I put the report on what is happening with the BLM here in San Diego. I posted it on the general discussion site. Under BLM and shooting in San Diego.
