Default Topographic maps. Looking for maps for D3-D5 hunting zone. Calaveras county.

While I know the area damn well and grew up there I would like to map out some points and trails for a hike in hunt we are going to do this year. We will be hiking separately and he will be bringing a buddy. I would like to map out a trail for him to meet me, This will be done pre season but I need to know where to get good topographic maps of the area.

Looks like a place. Good luck, I always thought Calavaras was too populated for good hunting, but I don't know the hills. Sad I've lived below them for my whole life and don't know that area.

I have been hunting calaveras my whole life and very few years have I left empty handed with my bear or deer. Just gotta work hard and put in time, Get to know the area. I have harvested quite a few big bucks out of here. The trick is finding the spots that aren't full of people .

buy the DeLorme TOPO map program, make all the maps that you want. You can make a trail, and have the distance and elevation change info right there. You can even view it in 3 D.

USGS topos are the best for accurately visualizing the landscape. The other maps mentioned don't have the same level of topographic detail. Delormes are great for manmade features, especially backcountry roads, and very handy when tooling around on a machine. Tom Harrison is very convenient, and I use them a lot. It is especially good when the map scale is close to or equal to the topos.

Hello ChrisO,

The URL below is for the USGS map viewer site. The system is a little tedious until you learn the system. It is a great way to find the topos you need to buy.

SNAC, Sierra Nevada Adventure Company, in Arnold has topos of most all of D4 & D5, REI in Stockton too. Call ahead to see if they have the ones you want. Nat Geo has a great topo program. PAX
