wow! we should get rid of the ATF or at the very least remove all power from them and have them as solely advisors, and not really have any power.

That was pretty hilarious. I mean, the fact that it happened sucks, but what a presentation.

And what moron thought up Operation Fast and Furious. I take it they saw the 4th movie. Talk about an original title. At least they thought up a new plot device; home made GPS trackers from Radio Shack. Doesn't the government, you know, have things like that.

I truly hope someone (read: several morons) get fired for this. I shall now go to sleep knowing that the competent agents at the ATF are hard at work. I hear they're testing out some home made surveillance equipment. Radio Shack must have had a clearance.

This is great news! John Stewart has a large following, most of which probably have never heard of this scandal - and now they have. And, Stewart made it clear the blame lay with the US DOJ, not some rouge ATF agents. Hopefully this will help increase mainstream news coverage of this scandal and intensify pressure to bring those responsible to justice.

Best line in the presentation - "If this was the plan that they went with, what plan did we reject?"

Outstanding!

Thumbs down You're surprised?

LOL REALLY this surprises you? Maybe if the youth today stopped using The Daily Show as their sole source of news people might have a clue lol. This Intranet thingy has all kinds of places you can find news.

During the Clinton era Reno and her ATF cronies ran the table on Jack Boots. This supposed operation happened months and months ago and caused the death of a Federal agent with one of these weapons. Where was CNN and MSNBC on it? Oh yeah 6 months latter they might show a clip or two and then poof never to be heard of again like Waco and Ruby Ridge. Glad to see The Daily Show using it for ratings and humor as Brian Terry's family mourns his death.

Bush may have had a hard on for killing foreigners he "assumed" were bad guys but as usual Dem's have turned on their own people yet again and find US to be the enemy. Read back the threat matrix a couple years ago when these Buffoons took office. They were more worried about "internal" American threats to the Government than plots by extremists inside or outside the country.

Funny, and I'm glad it aired - but they missed out on the part that really matters. The part that doesn't get a lot of attention is what the true intentions were - that was to create a situation that would justify increased gun regulations.

Let's believe their line and assume that the intent was to identify and apprehend high level drug lords (as if some hig level boss would get their own finger prints anywhere near these weapons), that's a noble goal - no one can argue with that. Assuming that was the goal, the the fact that they screwed up, well that's just typical bureaucratic bumbling, no big surprise there. A few heads roll - maybe.

The truth is far worse, the true intent was to spread propaganda about how USA sourced guns were the cause of Mexican violence, and based on that canard garner public and legislative support for enhanced eroding of our civil rights via increased draconian gun laws. Is that just idle speculation? No, and there are plenty of news stories and opinion pieces showing that's exactly what happened. Tell a big lie loud and long enough...

That's the angle I'd like to see The Daily Show tackle. Won't be holding my breath for that though.

Relax. There's a certain segment of society that will not be reached through the traditional media or even internet news sources. The Daily Show reaches a portion of them that otherwise wouldn't get any news at all. The more voices that are heard from all corners of society, the greater the chance that those in charge of this revolting operation will be turned out.

You're special. Not everyone can be as astute as you are. Leave the plebe's to their bread and infotainment.

Wow. I'm sorry about what happened to your Wheaties.

I think Stewart and the Daily Show deserve some kudos for this piece. Jon Stewart leans pretty far to the left of center, but he's nobody's shill. The man has always been willing to call a turd a turd, including when it comes to gun control, such as:

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/we...le-of-the-bans

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-h..._b_740200.html

I would have liked to see more attention to the underlying political motive behind ATF's program, but I also realize that Stewart's bit is better coverage of the situation than has been seen on MSNBC or much of the main street media, and is likely some of the best coverage that average folks not following the story are likely to see.

Well, the Daily Show does seem to get the news right more often than any other television source. John Stewart is certainly on point more often than any of the left-wing or right-wing talking heads.

Your point? Our government does contain morons who, in this case, have directly contributed to the deaths of dozens or hundreds of people and expanded a problem frequently blamed on American gun owners . I don't like slinging around emotionally charged terms like "enemy", but these guys are part of the problem.

If you don't like it when it's painfully obvious that it's US government officials who have embarrassed the country... well... yeah, I got nothing. I have no idea what you should do about that. It sounds like a real problem. Especially with the current administration in office.

He drew short of course of showing Obama laying blame on innnocent law abiding American gun stores. But I guess it's progress.

“This war is being waged with guns purchased not here, but in the United States. More than 90 percent of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United States, many from gun shops that line our shared border.” -Obama April 2009

He was on a fox show recently and he made the point that he's a comedian who has a certain slant to his comedy, but he isn't trying to be a political commentator. He made a point of saying isn't is sad that he's looked to for the news more then any "real" news organization because they feel he is more on point then anyone else in the "legit" news world

Which is a comment on our culture, not Mr. Stewart. There's also some real truth to the notion that his 'filter' is a lot less biased than many news organizations on both sides of the political spectrum.

Stewart is an honest liberal--a rare animal, but not extinct.

LOL

Negolien: Chill out. Nobody's laughing at the death of the agent. And so what if they're using the story for ratings. The fact this is mentioned on a VERY LIBERAL show, it's a good thing that these people who do rely on it for news are getting some truth for a change. Maybe the more it gets out there... even as a laugh... the more people would see how big of a joke the ATF really are.

Ridicule and satire have a way of sticking to the brain that the plain, sober truth doesn't have. People remember ridiculous situations better than they remember a straight factual account. For example, right or wrong, justified or not, Sarah Palin will forever have a hint of "dim bulb" around her. That was cultivated by the satirical, leftist media, and it has stuck. Ditto Dan Quayle. And remember Gerald Ford? Portrayed by the media as a klutz, and that's about all anybody remembers of his tenure.

See Monty Python for examples of satire that sticks -- some of those routines have become part of the language.

Lumberjack Sketch
Dead Parrot Sketch
Cheese shop
The Bruces (Australian philosophy professors)
All of "Holy Grail"
and many more.

Maybe someday people will say "ATF Gunwalker" and the room will crack up just recalling the events.
