I would suggest taking the magpul sight off the piston block it will probably melt under normal use.

BTW Great looking AR-74 would it be too much to ask for a range report

I've had people tell me from first hand experience that they won't melt even under heavy sustained fire. I'm thinking they would melt too. Does anyone have any pics of them melting?

Been on google the last 10 minutes and every site pretty much says the same thing. go with the manf. instructions and not place them on a gas block. If I have basic grasp of human behavior then I know some where some one is calling BS on this and testing it out. Just a matter of finding this persons photo's.

I found a post where someone said they spoke to Magpul and 60 rounds would be enough to heat it up and loosen it and upset the zero. I really don't need to experience that first hand but now I have to find a front sight.

Troy for now...

I should be that guy too, I have a few Front MBUS... I should fire this gun until it melts just to see it. Blob of magpul polymer just for Ss+Gs

Thanks

Haven't shot it yet. Everything I've read about the 5.45 mags and the 5.56 mags say that the rounds nose down and fail to feed. I'm not sure I'll have that problem since we're limited to 10 rounds.

the reg AR mags will give you problems because the ridge on the mag where it lines up the should on the rounds is further forward then the 5.45 mag

Yessir, correct.

That ridge is what guides the cartridge's shoulder on it's up. The 5.56 mag's guides are closer to the front of the mag and so that's been an issue, I'll have to see how mags limited to 10 rds in both 5.45 and 5.56 perform.

Nino if you want i can almost bet that if you have spare pmags and want to do some R&D you can file the ridge off the inside of the platic pmag and that should work

I've got a range day on the 29th so that will be the the soonest I do any kind of troubleshooting but I'll definitely try anything to get this girl running.

Awesome build! Is that at Metal Dog Tactical? I've seen that upper a few weeks ago.

P.S. I know it's a joke, but I highly not recommend being "that guy" I've seen a melted front MBUS Gen 1 on a 7.5inch Adams Arms GPU.
The MBUS was never deployed and my buddy didn't even notice until I tried to deploy it..
Basically the MBUS joints were semi-fused together and no longer able to flip. The upper has over 4000 rounds (never been rapid fired) through it with the MBUS riding on the piston block. It was also a PITA to get it off the piston block.

Yes sir it is at MDT.

I will take your advice! We'll see if I can find any other front sights, KAC has been the only other brand that has been appealing to me.

Still debating whether or not to put a green laser and/or flashlight on this gun to light my way through the night. I run green lasers on my AK and AR pistols so I do like them and see them being useful. If I can find a reliable magazine to feed this girl then I'll definitely get it some kind of darkness enlightenment device.

So far holding it is nice and easy, my hand sits a lot higher and my finger is not reaching too far for the trigger. The stock feels quite nice and solid.

I wanted the TROY lever but I'm too lazy to order it.

Very nice 5.45 ar! I'm esp. loving how you put an AK-74 muzzle brake on an AR! I'm dead curious how much it'll shoot, I expect a range report, ASAP!

Thank you, I'll be hitting the range next weekend! I will bringing a lot of magazines with me to determine what specific magazine will feed well.

My Leatherwood Hi-Lux CMR arrived today, mated it to a CAA mount, I'll switch it out to the Burris P.E.P.R. QD if I like it when it comes in.

From the side view, it almost looks like a Barrett M-82 (the ak-74 brake + scope really contributes to that look ),

except chambered in 5.45, imagine that! Badass rifle and what a way to stand out among the legions of AR's everyone owns... I guess I'll crawl back to my hole and be happy with my M-16a2 clone

That thing is really sexy I put the efx a1 on my mk116, got some range time today and zero'ed it. Absolutely love it, I will never go back to colapsable stocks ever again! btw that Troy battle ax grip is also really nice on the AR pistol also how do you like that scope?

Thank you! I've successfully put a unique looking AR together.

Glad you like the stock!
The scope is great as far as I can gather before taking it to the range. Next weekend will be my chance to shoot it and it looks very promising.
I like that it has a sharp laser etched reticle with ranging. The illumination is not the brightest but thats while looking at the brightest objects in the brightest day light conditions. I can still locate the 1 moa dot against dark objects and the illumination helps too. I opted for the red illumination version because it will be easier on the eyes when I have to use it at night.

here is the reticle.

Thank you! I can already tell I will enjoy it! This is my first GP AR and I chose Adams Arms for their melonite coating which will help preserve the whole upper when shooting corrosive ammo.

Why thank you! Yup next one is an AK with some AR genes!

Here she is, in pretty picture style!

Took it to the range, still need another session to zero at 100 yds. I ran out of time

Tested mags that didn't work too well:
a few GI 10 round body short mags (the bodies bulged and rounds would get stuck)

MAGS that worked for 5.45
GI Steel and Aluminum
10/20 PMAGS
10/30 PMAGS
CProducts 5.45 mag

Of course the nosing down of the rounds is something I am not likely to experience; think mag capacity for this one.

As far as accuracy, I was sort of in a rush the whole time. Los Altos seems to run in a haste and this didn't help me much. I can say that at 25 yards I was able to get a very tight group.

Recoil did feel less than my 5.56 Carbine that runs a Vortex Flash Hider. It also felt different, maybe because it's a gas piston upper.

Do I like it? YES
Ammo is cheap, overall runs cleaner and it's different from my other ARs.
